ACID ATTACK / BURN

Acid attacks are a form of violence in which an assailant throws or otherwise applies a corrosive
substance, such as sulphuric acid or hydrochloric acid, onto the body of the victim. These attacks can
cause serious injuries, including burns, scarring, and even blindness. Acid attacks are often targeted at
women and are motivated by various factors, including jealousy, revenge, and discrimination.

 How acid attack occurs:

Acid attacks typically involve the intentional use of a corrosive substance, such as sulphuric acid or
hydrochloric acid, to cause harm to another person. The attacker may throw the acid at the victim,
pour it over them, or otherwise apply it to their body.
Acid attacks are often targeted at the face, which can result in severe injuries and disfigurement. The
acid can cause burns to the skin and underlying tissue, leading to scarring and other permanent
damage. Acid attacks can also cause damage to the eyes, leading to vision loss or blindness. In
addition to the physical injuries, acid attacks can also have psychological and social consequences for
victims, including trauma, stigmatization, and difficulty accessing medical care and support.

 Factors related to acid attack:

Acid attacks may be motivated by a variety of factors, including jealousy, revenge, and
discrimination. They can also be used as a means of intimidation or control. Acid attacks are often
targeted at women and are used as a form of gender-based violence.

 Theories proposed to define acid attacks:

There are several theories that have been proposed to explain the occurrence of acid attacks. Some of
these theories include:

1.Gender-based violence:
Acid attacks are often targeted at women and are considered a form of gender-based violence. They
may be motivated by factors such as jealousy, revenge, or a desire to exert control over the victim.

2.Stigma and discrimination:

Acid attacks may be motivated by a desire to punish or ostracize individuals who are perceived as
violating social norms or expectations. This can include individuals who are perceived as being too
independent or who are involved in relationships that are not approved by their community.

3.Lack of legal recourse:
In some cases, acid attacks may be carried out as a means of seeking justice or revenge when other
legal channels are unavailable or perceived as ineffective.

4.Poverty and lack of access to resources:

Acid attacks may also be more likely to occur in contexts where there are limited economic and social
resources and opportunities, and where individuals may feel that they have few other options for
addressing grievances or resolving conflicts.
It is important to note that these are just a few of the many theories that have been proposed to explain
the occurrence of acid attacks, and that the specific factors that contribute to their occurrence can vary
greatly depending on the context.

 Laws in Pakistan related to acid attack :

Pakistan has enacted several laws to address acid attacks and provide support to victims. Some of
these laws include:

1.Acid and Burn Crime Bill 2011:

This law imposes severe punishment on perpetrators of acid attacks, including imprisonment and
fines. It also provides compensation to victims and establishes a fund to support their medical
treatment and rehabilitation.

2.The Prevention of Anti-Women Practices (Criminal Law Amendment)

Act, 2011:
This law criminalizes a number of practices that are commonly used to oppress and discriminate
against women, including acid attacks. It imposes severe penalties on perpetrators and provides for
the compensation and rehabilitation of victims.

3.The Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 2013:

This law amended the Pakistan Penal Code to increase the penalties for crimes involving the use of
corrosive substances, including acid attacks. It also established a fund to provide financial assistance
to victims of such crimes.

4.The Acid and Burn Crime Prevention Act, 2017:

This law further strengthens the penalties for acid attacks and provides for the compensation and
rehabilitation of victims. It also requires the government to establish burn centres and provide medical
treatment to victims.
In addition to these laws, Pakistan has also implemented a number of initiatives to raise awareness
about acid attacks and provide support to victims. These include the establishment of a toll-free
helpline for victims of gender-based violence, the establishment of a Acid and Burn Crime Cell within
the police department to investigate acid attacks, and the establishment of a Acid and Burn Crime
Victims Fund to provide financial assistance to victims
