Stability Set 2 Class 3

This document contains 10 problems related to cargo work and ship stability. The problems cover topics like the difference between angle of loll and angle of list, calculating GM when part of a cargo tank is emptied, finding how much deck cargo was lost given a resulting list angle, calculating the position of the center of flotation after cargo is discharged, constructing a ship's stability curve from given GZ ordinates, and describing terms related to cargo handling and stability.

Cargo Work & Stability Set -2

Prepared by Md Noor Hasan

1. a. What are the difference between angle of loll and angle of list?
b. How will you correct the angle of list?
c. How will you correct the angle of loll?

2. A vessel displacing 80001, has a rectangular deep tank 10 m long, 8 m wide and 9 m deep
full of SW. The KM is 7 m and KG is 6.2 m. Find the GM when 1/3 of this tank is pumped out.
(Subra, Exercise 10, Math 7)

3. A ship of 7500 tonnes displacement has KM 8.6 m, KG 7.8m and 20m beam. A quantity of deck
cargo is lost from the starboard side (KG 12 m, and centre of gravity 6m in from the rail).
If the resulting list is 3 degrees 20 minutes to port, find how much deck cargo was lost. (Derrett,
Exercise 13, Math 7)

4. A ship arrives in port with drafts 6.8m F and 7.5m A. The following cargo is discharged:
90 tonnes centre of gravity 30m forward of amidships
40 tonnes centre of gravity 25m aft of amidships
50 tonnes centre of gravity 50m aft of amidships
The drafts are now 6.7m F and 7.4m A. Find the position of the centre of flotation relative to amidships.
(Derrett, Exercise 15, Math 16)

5. A vessel is loaded up ready for departure. KM Is 11.9 m. KG is 9.52m with a displacement of 20 550
tonnes. From the ship's Cross Curves of Stability, the GZ ordinates for a
displacement of 20 550 tonnes and a VCG of 8m above base are as follows

Angle of heel (e): 0 15 30 45 60 75 90

GZ ordinate (m): 0 1.10 2.22 2.60 2.21 1.25 0.36

Using this information, construct the ship's Statical Stability curve for this condition of loading and
determine the following:
a. Maximum righting lever GZ.
b. Angle of heel at which this maximum GZ occurs.
c. Angle of heel at which the deck edge just becomes immersed.
d. Range of stability (Derrett, Exercise 16, Math 13)

6. Describe the following terms as per IMDG code - Away from, Separated from, Separated by a
complete compartment or hold from, Separated longitudinally by an intervening
complete compartment or hold from.

7. What are the Factors to be considered which affect the stability of the vessel while carrying timber
deck cargoes?
8. Define the following terms: Flash point temperature, Lower flammable limit (LFL), Upper flammable
limit (UFL). Draw the flammable range diagram.
9. Describe the hazards associated with solid bulk cargoes. Explain the criteria for assessing the
acceptability of loading solid bulk cargoes.

10. Describe the precautions to be taken prior and during loading heavy lift.
