LU1 Part 2

The document discusses different types of user interfaces that have emerged over the past 40 years, including command-line interfaces, graphical user interfaces, multimedia interfaces, virtual reality interfaces, website interfaces, mobile device interfaces, appliance interfaces, voice user interfaces, pen-based interfaces, touchscreen interfaces, gesture-based interfaces, haptic interfaces, multimodal interfaces, shareable interfaces, tangible interfaces, augmented reality interfaces, wearable interfaces, robot and drone interfaces, brain computer interfaces, smart interfaces, and natural user interfaces. Examples are provided for many of the interface types. The evolution of user interfaces from early command-line interfaces to more modern touchscreen, gesture, and natural interfaces is also covered.

Human Computer Interaction

Unit 1: Foundation of HCI

Types of User Interfaces
Agenda
 Introduction to HCI
 HCI, ID, Usability and UX
 The importance of HCI
 Types of user interfaces
 Considerations

2
Types of user interfaces
 The UI is the part of the computer system with which a
user interacts in order to undertake tasks and achieve
goals

 It is viewed as the “bridge” between the user and the

system

 There are different types of user interface (UI), each with

its own ways of interaction, for different environments,
people, places, and activities

3
Types of user interfaces
 Evolution of UI

4
Types of user interfaces
UI that have emerged in the last 40 years:
Command-line interface Gesture-based systems
Graphical user interface (GUI) Haptic interfaces
Multimedia Multimodal interfaces
Virtual reality Shareable interfaces
Website Tangible interfaces
Mobile devices Augmented reality
Appliances Wearables
Voice user interfaces Robots and drones
Pen-based interfaces Brain computer interface
Touchscreens Smart

Note: These interfaces are not mutually exclusive – some can appear in two or more categories.

5
Types of user interfaces
 Command-line interface
 Requires user to type in commands using keyboards

6
Types of user interfaces
 Graphical user interface (GUI)
 Consists of the basic building
blocks: Windows, icons, menus,
pointing devices

7
Types of user interfaces
 Multimedia interface
 Combines different media within a single interface – graphics,
text, video, sound, animation, various interactivity

8
Types of user interfaces
 Virtual reality interface
 Interface when user is immersed in
an artificial environment

9
Types of user interfaces
 Website interface
 Interfaces of the pages viewed on the World Wide Web

10
Types of user interfaces
 Mobile devices interface
 Interfaces of handheld devices used when on the move

11
Types of user interfaces
 Appliances interface
 Interfaces of machines for everyday use in the home

12
Types of user interfaces
 Voice user interface
 Requires the user to speak

13
Types of user interfaces
 Pen-based interface
 Requires user to write/draw/select/move objects on an interface
using stylus/light pen

14
Types of user interfaces
 Touchscreen interface
 Interface that detects user’s touch presence and location on the
display

15
Types of user interfaces
 Gesture-based systems interface
 Requires user to move arms and hands to communicate or provide
information to the device

16
Types of user interfaces
 Haptic interface
 Using vibration and force to provide tactile feedback

17
Types of user interfaces
 Multimodal interface
 Uses different modalities (touch, sight, sound, speech) to enrich
user experiences

18
Types of user interfaces
 Shareable interface
 Designed for more than 1 user to use

19
Types of user interfaces
 Tangible interface
 Uses sensor-based interaction where physical objects are coupled
with digital interactions

VoxBox questionnaire machine

MagicCubes toolkit
20
Types of user interfaces
 Augmented reality interface
 Interface with virtual representations superimposed on physical
devices and objects

21
Types of user interfaces
 Wearables interface
 Interfaces of devices that are worn on the body

22
Types of user interfaces
 Robots and drones interface
 Robots: programmable machines to do tasks
 Drones: unmanned aerial vehicle

23
Types of user interfaces
 Brain computer interface
 Provides communication pathway between a person’s brain waves
and another device

24
Types of user interfaces
 Smart interface
 Interface of devices that have some intelligence and are
connected to the Internet
 IoT

25
Types of user interfaces
 Natural user interfaces
 Natural user interface enablespeople to interact with computers in
the same way they interact with the physical world through using
their voice, hands and bodies
 Natural form of interaction include touch, speech, gesture,
handwriting and vision
 The naturalness refers to the way they exploit everyday skills we
have learned such as talking, writing, gesturing, walking, and
picking up objects
 Users can speak to the machines, stroke their surfaces, gesture at
them in the air, dance on mats, smile to get a reaction, etc.

26
Types of user interfaces
 Natural user interfaces
 Xbox Kinect
 Microsoft PixelSense
 Perceptive Pixel
 3D immersive touch
