CITIZENSHIP AND TYPES OF CITIZENSHIP:

Citizenship:

“Citizenship is the legal and societal membership status granted to


individuals by a sovereign state. It confers both rights and
responsibilities, such as the right to vote, work, and receive protection
from the government, along with the duty to obey laws and contribute
to the welfare of the community”

TYPES OF CITIZENSHIP

 Birthright Citizenship:

Definition: Acquired by being born within a country's borders.

Example: Someone born in France is automatically a French citizen.

 Naturalized Citizenship:

Definition: Attained through a legal process after fulfilling residency


and other requirements.

Example: An immigrant to the United States who becomes a citizen


after meeting specified criteria.
 Citizenship by Descent:

Definition: Inherited from one or both parents who are citizens.

Example: A child born to Indian citizens abroad may have Indian


citizenship.

 Dual Citizenship:

Definition: Holding citizenship of two countries simultaneously.

Example: A person born in Canada to Italian parents may have both


Canadian and Italian citizenship.

 Citizenship by Marriage:

Definition: Obtained through marriage to a citizen.

Example: Someone marrying a British citizen and gaining British


citizenship.

 Honorary Citizenship:

Definition: Conferred as an honor without meeting standard


requirements.

Example: Canada granted honorary citizenship to Nelson Mandela for


his anti-apartheid efforts.
 Economic Citizenship:

Definition: Attained through significant financial investments in the


country.

Example: Malta offers citizenship to individuals making substantial


contributions to the nation's economic development.

 Temporary or Resident Citizenship:

Definition: Granted to individuals residing in a country for a specific


period.

Example: A foreigner working in Australia with a temporary visa has


certain rights but is not a full citizen.

These citizenship types illustrate the various ways people can belong to
and be recognized by a nation, encompassing factors such as birth,
familial ties, legal processes, and contributions to the country's well-
being.
