1. Installation Procedure

1.1 General Procedure

BNWAS (Bridge Navigation Watch Alarm System) is a monitoring alarm system

which for regularly checking the vessel operating conditions of the watch officer.
Visual and audible alarm will be generated in the wheelhouse when the office fails to
press the reset button within pre-set intervals. If the office doesn't acknowledge the
alarm, it will be transmitted to other rooms in order to inform backup officer of the
negligence, for maritime casualty avoidance.

BNWAS fully conforms IMO resolution MSC.128(75) and IEC62616 international

standards.

The SOLAS amendment V/19 requires all kinds of ships to be equipped as follows:
1 cargo ships of 150 gross tonnage and upwards and passenger ships irrespective of
size constructed on or after 1 July 2011;
2 passenger ships irrespective of size constructed before 1 July 2011, not later than the
frrst survey* after 1 July 2012;
3 cargo ships of3,000 gross tonnage and upwards constructed before 1 July 2011, not
later than the first survey* after 1 July 2012;
4 cargo ships of 500 gross tonnage and upwards but less than 3,000 gross tonnage
constructed before 1 July 2011, not later than the first survey* after_ 1 July 2013; and
5 cargo ships of 150 gross tonnage and upwards but less than 500 gross tonnage
constructed before 1 July 2011, not later than the first survey* after l July 2014.

1.2 Functionality

1.2.lOperational Modes

The BNWAS incorporate three operational modes:

1 Automatic
Automatically brought into operation whenever the ship's heading or track control
system is activated and inhibited when this system is not activated.
2 Manualon
3 Manualoff

1 First stage bridge audible alarm

If not reset, the BNWAS shall additionally sound a first stage audible alarm on the
bridge 15 s after the visual indication is initiated.
2 Second stage remote audible alarm
If not reset, the BNWAS shall additionally sound a second stage remote audible
alarm in the back-up officer's and/or Master's location 15 s after the first stage
audible alarm is initiated.
3 Third stage remote audible alarm
If not reset, the BNWAS shall additionally sound a third stage remote audible
alarm at the locations of further crew members capable of taking corrective
actions 90 s after the second stage remote audible alarm is initiated.

1.2.3 Reset function

The reset function shall, by a single operator action, cancel the visual indication and
all audible alarms and initiate a further dormant period. If the reset function is
activated before the end of the dormant period, the period shall be re-initiated to run
for its full duration from the time of the reset.
Single operator action is defined as activating a hard-key or soft-key including any
necessary cursor movement.

1.2.4 Emergency call

Emergency call can be in the bridge, resulting in the second and third level audible
alarm.

The 2nd Pin is to select the open-close node signal of the Auto Pilot. When it is on, the
Auto Pilot input is normal open, or is normal close.

The 3rd Pin is for work mode, there is automatic mode in system if this pin is on, or
there is no automatic mode in the system

The 4 th Pin is for the work way of automatic mode. When this pin is on, the system's
automatic mode conforms the IEC62616, whether the system run caused by the signal
from Dll of JPl0 or Pin7,8,9 of JP7 in this condition, and when this pin is off, the
system's conforms with regulation SOLAS V/19.2.2.3 which requires the BNWAS to
be in operation whenever the ship is underway at sea, the automatic mode is as the
same as manual on mode, it means the system will be always run in automatic mode.

Note: After Setting SW2, please reset the system.

2.2.4 Receive from GPS

The BNWAS receives the UTC signal form GPS for checking the system time when
start and also every 12 hours.
The interface is pin 1,2,3 of JP7.

2.2.5 Send to VDR

The interface is pin 4,5,6 of JP7.
See 2.3

2.2.6 Receive form Auto pilot

The BNWAS receives serial data from Auto Pilot (JP7-7, 8, 9) . The Pin 4 of SW2 is
on and the system is at automatic work mode. The system will be run if it receives the
"RSA" or "HTD".

2.2. 7 Receive the open-close signal form Auto or Manual pilot

The BNWAS supplies the open-close node interface for checking if the pilot 1s
working or not (JPlO Dll). When BNWAS is working at Automatic mode and the pin
4 of SW2 is on, it will be activated if the node changed. The node could be switched
normal open or normal close through the 2nd pin of the DIP switch SW2.

Note: the Automatic mode of BNWAS is not fit for some of the vessels (SOLAS
V/19.2.2.3). The system could be set enable or disable the Automatic mode in the
installation. If the Automatic mode is disabled, its options in the interface will be hid,
the Automatic mode will be cancelled.

When the Automatic mode is enabled, and the Auto Pilot is available, please connect
the NEMA0183 output of the Auto Pilot to the BNWAS RUDDER port. If the Auto

5

Pilot is not available, please connect the open-close node signal of the Manual Pilot to
the BNWAS ID! interface. Above operation could ensure that BNWAS will be
activated at the Automatic mode when the vessel on sailing.

2.2.8 The interface of reset signal

DI2 of JPIO is for the reset signal, this interface is a normal open dry node. This
interface can connect with the output of Auto Pilot which sends the signal of motion
conn.

2.2.9 The interface of the emergency call

DB of JPl0 is for the emergency call signal, this interface is a normal open dry node.

2.2.10 The interface of the power fault

DO 1 of JP9 is output, and it is a normal open dry node, and it will be close ifthere is
power fault in system

2.2.11 The interface of alarm

The JP8 is dry node output for the alarm.
See the table

1 Pin 1 ,2 Normal open node of Bridge alarm
2 Pin 2 ,3 Normal close node of Bridge alarm
3 Pin4 5 Normal open node of2ru1 remote alarm
4 Pin 5 ,6 Normal close node of 2nd remote alarm
5 Pin 7 ,8 Normal open node of 3rd remote alarm
6 Pin 8 ,9 Normal close node of3 rdremote alarm

2.2.12 The interface of digital reset signal conforming to IEC61162

The interface is pin 10,11,12 of JP7. This input port are available for connection of
external reset devices from other equipment, the receive data must conform to the
IEC6 ll 62, and the reset operates only if the information has been derived from a
physical activity.

The sentence EVE (General event message) is designed to transmit actions by the
crew on the bridge. The tag code field should be set as "BNWAS" and the event
description field should be set as "Operator activity''.
