1.0 INTRODUCTION
Crowdsourcing platforms are online platforms that use the power of a huge group of people,
colloquially known as the "crowd," to complete certain tasks, develop ideas, or solve issues.
Individuals, corporations, and organisations can use these platforms to tap into the pooled
knowledge, talents, and resources of a broad collection of people from around the world. The
platforms often operate on the premise that a big, diverse group of people may collectively
give better solutions, ideas, or outcomes than a smaller, homogeneous group or individual.
This method provides for a greater range of ideas and experience, potentially leading to more
inventive and cost-effective results.
Crowdsourcing offers several benefits, including cost-effectiveness, faster execution, and
access to a diverse pool of talents not available in-house. By dividing a task into smaller
segments and assigning them to a crowd of workers, a business can significantly reduce the
turnaround time from a week to just a few hours. This approach allows companies to tap into
specialized skills from a global workforce, ultimately leading to more efficient and rapid results.
A few examples of crowdsourcing platforms which are famous globally such as Freelancer,
Upwork, Guru, Fiver and many more. Numerous job types can be outsourced to the crowd,
such as website development and transcription services. When companies seek to design
new products, they increasingly rely on the crowd for opinions. Rather than relying on small
focus groups, businesses can leverage social media to reach millions of consumers, ensuring
diverse perspectives from various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Over time, the idea of crowdsourcing has experienced significant global growth. In Malaysia,
initiatives have been introduced to foster the advancement and adoption of crowdsourcing
platforms. Malaysia has recently begun exploring crowdsourcing, leading to a limited
understanding of its successful implementation. There are four main crowdsourcing platforms
in Malaysia which are proposed platforms such as YourPartTime (YourPartTime, 2015),
EduScource (EduSource, 2015), and MyKerja (MyKerja, 2015), along with the established
MyTeksi (MyTeksi, 2015), are part of Malaysia Crowdsourcing Association's proof of concepts
for crowdsourcing in Malaysia. Among them, MyTeksi is an established platform known for taxi
booking services. One of the few existing studies, like Arshad, Salleh, Aris, Janom, & Mastuki
(2013b), conducted a general analysis of the current crowdsourcing platforms in Malaysia.
However, there is a need for a more detailed assessment to evaluate the performance of
Malaysia's crowdsourcing platforms.

3.0 PROFILING PLATFORMS
Crowdsourcing profiling systems are online platforms that collect and analyse user data,
thoughts, or feedback in order to develop profiles or user personas. These platforms are often
used in market research, product development, and other areas where a thorough
understanding of user preferences and behaviours is essential. There are five profiling
platforms which I have registered through out this UBM 599 Digital Workforce journey which
are Freelancer, LinkedIn, Upwork, Guru and Fiverr. I believe these platforms are the most
common ones and familiar among many people. Thus, it will ease me in searching for jobs
and interact with employers from all over the world.

4.0 ONLINE PAYMENT REGISTRATION
PayPal is a well-known and trustworthy payment provider that provides numerous benefits to
both crowdsourcing sites and their users. Many crowdsourcing platforms choose to use
PayPal as their primary payment method for several reasons such as global reach, ease of
use, credibility, security and many more. I've set up a PayPal account using my email to
connect with my worldwide crowdsourcing platform in order to make paycheck transactions
easier. The main reason why I choose PayPal is because of its security as I believe that PayPal
is known for its robust security measures, including encryption protocols and fraud detection
systems. Users feel more confident using a platform that employs PayPal for payments, as it
helps protect their financial information.

5.0 BIDDING
I exclusively utilised Freelancer to bid on contracts throughout the bidding process. It is
because I find freelancer's the user interface to be user-friendly, and I also want to make use
of MDEC's free premium account. I have made a total bidding of 50 bids which includes 42
projects and 8 contests. Most of the tasks that I had bid was related to my core specialty which
are language translation, logo design, content creation and Microsoft data entry.
5.1 EXAMPLE OF MY PROPOSAL COVER LETTER IN THE BIDDING
The diagram above shows my personal best sample of proposal cover letter in the bidding at
Freelancer. The job that I have applied was to become a language translator from Arabic to
English for a YouTube video. The reason why I applied for this job is because I believed in my
skilled capabilities in the Arabic language because I had a few experiences becoming a
language translator. The job also involved the YouTube platform which I was very familiar with
as I used to be a content creator when I was younger.
I believe this was my best proposal as the client was interested with the application I made
until he/she viewed my profile in depth. Unfortunately, the client did not follow up with me and
I was not able to secure the job which I really was focused on.

5.3 PROBLEMS DURING PROCESS OF BIDDING
1. NO RESPONSE AND FEEDBACK FROM CLIENTS
According to my experience, the majority of proposals and contest entries are not seen or
responded to by recruiters. In my case, I have not received any reply or even seen my proposal
for some jobs after bidding on them two months ago. In one case, one of the clients has viewed
my bid, but he/she did not follow up with me and later disappeared.
2. DISAPPEARING BIDS ON BID INSIGHTS
I realised that even though I was granted a premium account from MDEC of obtaining 100
bids for my account, though I noticed that whenever I would look back on the jobs I have bid
on bid insights it would disappear. The bids on the bid insights would only display the latest 20
bids. It was a challenge for me as I needed to keep track of the clients upon my bids if there
are any progress.
3. COMPETITION AMONG OTHER BIDDERS
There is undoubtedly that each initiative faces intense competition. In my instance, the majority
of the tasks for which I have bid will have more than 50 other bidders. It comprises highly rated
competency, which gives a reduced payment rate and a shorter time for completion. It reduces
my chances of being chosen because I must compete with a large number of bidders.

6.0 STAR RATING AND INCOME
Unfortunately, I was unable to secure or obtain any jobs as a result of my bidding. Some were
rejected, while others were awarded to other bidders. So far in my freelance career, I have not
earned a single star or earned any money. This could be due to a number of causes, including
the fact that the majority of the clients did not view my proposal because I am a beginner, an
unappealing concept and profile, or a lack of my skill. The logo design work has too much
competition, with the majority of bidders holding a graphic design certificate. As a result, my
proposal scores lower than those of other bidders with high ratings and experience. But I'm
not going to give up yet.

7.0 INCOME GENERATION
As previously said, I am unable to obtain any tasks from clients in order to generate cash. So
far, my total profits since joining Freelancer have been RM 0, and my prior earnings over the
last 30 days have also been RM 0. Even though my goal before starting this freelancing was
to earn at least RM 100 via crowdsourcing platforms, after going through each stage, I found
it difficult to even get the first task. As a result, I will reconsider my plan in order to obtain my
first Ringgit in the future.

8.0 CLIENT REVIEW AND STAR RATING
Fortunately, I received ratings from two of the contests which I entered. Both of the contests
were related to logo designing. I found out that the clients rated my work 5 days after I entered
the contest. Even though I was not selected as the winner of the contest, I was able to receive
a 1-star rating for my submission of the contest for both of the logos. I believe that I have
expertise in designing logo and it showed that the client considered my design to be selected
as not all entries were rated. Thus, I am glad that the client rated my work and it motivates me
to become a better logo designer.

9.0 CONCLUSION
In conclusion, this freelancing journey has taught me how to become a good freelancer by
learning each step, beginning with signing up for crowdsourcing platforms, signing up for
PayPal, building a good profile and portfolio, bidding on credible projects, and finally, but not
least, closing the deal with the client. Even if I do not win or receive an assignment as a result
of my bids, I will not give up because freelancing is a great way for students like me to
supplement our income. Not only that, but as the majority of the tasks are digitalized, the
market or demand for this job will grow in the future. To be successful in freelancing, we need
a solid profile and proposal to increase our chances of being hired.
Besides that, the developer side must improve the platform's security so that freelancers can
comfortably bid on the assignment. Last but not least, by participating in freelancing, we may
expand our value and talents by honing skills and gaining experience that will be valuable in
the future, particularly for the workforce.
In a nutshell, the subject Digital Workforce, UBM 599, has taught me new knowledge of the
trending digital workforce. This subject is crucial in helping personal development and trains
individuals to enhance their inner skills and find opportunities to help people generate side
income. I hope to implement these skills in my daily life and share my knowledge of the digital
workforce with many others worldwide.
