Ang Mga Panalangin at Pagdiriwang Na May Kinalaman Sa Pahanon NG Pagdating at Pasko NG Pagsilang
Ang Mga Panalangin at Pagdiriwang Na May Kinalaman Sa Pahanon NG Pagdating at Pasko NG Pagsilang
1. The liturgical year is about to end and Christmas is just around the corner. But
before we put on the trappings of the season, we must, as ministers of the sacred
mysteries, be instruments in making our celebrations truly meaningful and fitting for
the commemoration of the birth of the Messiah. Saint Augustine described Advent
as the exercise of the “enlargement of the heart.” Christmas is about receiving the
greatest gift of God to humanity. The larger the gift the bigger the receptacle must
be. As pastors we must prepare our people according to the mind of the church and
not what shopping malls and the rampant commercialization has done to our
celebration of the incarnation.
2. The advent wreath will be placed near the lectern. It is strongly advised to refrain
from putting on Christmas decorations during advent but rather gradually begin
placing them during the start of the Misa de Gallo until the midnight mass. Christmas
trees should not be set up in the sanctuary but in the gathering area in front of parish
churches.
3. It is advised to celebrate this rite during the anticipated mass of the parish on
Saturday evening in order to highlight the significance of the light. If there will be no
anticipated mass, the rite may be celebrated on the first mass of Sunday.
4. At the other masses after this lighting, the advent candle should already be burning
right at the very start of the mass. Or during the entrance procession a designated
family may carry the lighted candle then places it on the wreath. There shall be no
other lighting such as lighting the candle before the gospel.
5. This rite shall take place after the customary reverence of the altar. After this rite, the
mass will continue as usual without omitting the penitential rite.
6. The designated family who will light the first candle, ministers and priest will process
to the altar. During the lighting of the candle, an appropriate LITURGICAL song
maybe sung (e.g O come o come Emmanuel or Halina Hesus)
7. During the Misa de Gallo, this rite of lighting the advent wreath is omitted. Instead a
simple lighting maybe done at the beginning of the celebration of the Mass.
8. It is suggested that at the start of the Christmas masses the advent wreath be already
kept and the Christmas crib given emphasis.
CONCLUSION:
Life is a constant awaiting and expectation. For us Christians, such awaiting and
expectation are given a superior meaning, when the object of our desire is the person of
Christ who comes to us, dwells among us, and fills our hearts with hope. Advent is a season
that symbolizes the entire Christian life. Advent ushers in a new liturgical year; it ushers in
also a new and always renewed beginning for us who wait with joyful hope for the coming of
Our Lord Jesus Christ daily until the end of time.
BLESSING OF ADVENT WREATH
P. In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
R. Amen.
P. Dear friends the Church now enters the season of Advent, a time
when we prepare to commemorate the Coming of our Messiah in the
flesh and when he comes in glory at the end of time. In front of us is the
advent wreath a symbol that challenges us to prepare amidst the
confusing values of our time as the lights of this crown increase may our
hearts become lighted lamps to a world enveloped in the darkness of
sin. The first gift of advent is Peace.
Lord God, Your Church Joyfully awaits the coming of its savior, who
enlightens our hearts and dispels the darkness of ignorance and sin.
Pour forth your blessings upon us as we light the candles of this wreath;
may their light reflect the splendor of Christ, who is Lord, forever and
ever.
Amen.
Or.
Lord our God, we praise you for your Son, Jesus Christ: he is Emmanuel,
the hope of the peoples, he is the wisdom that teaches and guides us he
is the savior of every nation.
Lord God, let your blessing come upon us as we light the candles of this
wreath. May the wreath and its light be a sign of Christ’s promise to
bring us salvation. May he come quickly and not delay. We ask this
through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
The priest then returns to the chair, the mass will continue as usual.
P. In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
R. Amen.
P. Dear friends Jesus said I am the light of the world. Whoever follows
me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. This week as
we intensify our preparation for the Lord’s coming let us fill his manger
with hearts burning with works of Justice and mercy.
The father of the family reads a verse.
Father: The Lord Brings the light of Justice to his people; a light that no
darkness of prejudice or cruelty can extinguish.
The second candle is lighted by the youngest family member.
P. In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
R.. Amen.
Father : The Lord Brings the light of Joy to his people; a light that no darkness of
pain or trouble can extinguish.
The priest then returns to the chair, the mass will continue as usual.
P. In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C. Amen.
P. Dear friends Jesus said “therefore I tell you do not worry about your
life and what you will eat and what you will wear … you are much more
important in God’s eyes”. In this week ask for the intercession of our
lady that we imitate the hope that she had in doing God’s will.
The father of the family reads a verse.
Father: The Lord Brings the light of Hope to his people; a light that no
darkness of fear or anxiety can extinguish.
The fourth candle is lighted by the youngest family member.
P. God of every nation and people, from the very beginning of creation
you have made manifest your love: when our need for a savior was
great you sent your Son to be born of the Virgin Mary. To our lives he
brings Joy and peace, justice, mercy and love.
Lord bless + all who look up to this manger; may it remind us of the
humble birth of Jesus, and raise up our thoughts to him, who is God with
us and savior of all, and who lives and reigns forever and ever.
Amen.
He sprinkles the manger with holy water then the mass continues as usual.
B.Amen

Blessing of Calendars
This blessing is to be done after the mass during the solemnity of the Lord’s Epiphany
Let us pray
God our Father, Lord of time and history from the very beginning you
have revealed your wonderful plan to humanity. You have given order
to times and seasons. You are the reason for our beginning and the goal
of our end, grant O Lord your generous blessings upon these calendars
and all who use them. Let their hopes and dreams be assisted by your
merciful help. Let their plans culminate and merge with your eternal
will. As they have been obedient to you in this life they may rejoice with
you in your kingdom in heaven when the sorrow of time ceases and
eternity of joy starts, where you live and reign forever and ever. Amen.
