2.2 SYSTEMDESCRIPTION
VAF viscosity control systemsare, besidesother applications, intendedfor use in fuel oil treatmentsystemsto
obtain a correct measurementand control ofthe fuel oil viscositv.

Figure I Recommendedfuel viscosity control systeminstallation, shows a typical fuel treatmentsystemwith

retum line from the engine. In this configuration, the degassing/mixingtank operatesas a fuel buffer, ensuring
gradual changesof viscosity which results in a more stable control ofthe viscosity. The viscosity sensoris
usedto measurethe actual viscosity ofthe fuel oil. The signal from the sensoris comparedto the setpointofa
viscosiry controller, which regulatesthe output ofthe fuel heatervia a control element(steamor thermal oil
valve. or electric heatercabinet).

2.3 SYSTEM COMPONENTS
VAF viscosity control systemconsistsof:
e Viscositymeasuringsensor
. Temperaturemeasuringsensor
Standardfor ViscoSenseo,Optional for Viscothermo
o Electronic viscosity signal converter
Interfacebox for ViscoSenseo,Electronic differential pressuretransmitter (DTP) for Viscotherm@
o Electronic viscosity controller
o Control valve for steamor thermal liquid (optional)
o Analogueviscosiryindicator(optional)
r Viscosity recorder (optional)

2.3.1 Viscositysensor
For operation information on your viscosity sensorrefer to the Technical Information Bulletin (TIB) supplied
with the sensor. For ViscoSenseowith interface box refer to TIB 742 and for Viscotherm Sensor/Electronic
TransmitterAssembly, refer to TIB 739. TheseManuals also include a functional descriptionof viscosity
control systemswith ViscoSenseoor Viscotherm@.

2.3.2 Viscositvcontroller
The viscosity controller is a microprocessor-basedinstrumentwith proportional and integratingcontrol action.
It is available in four types to match the specific requirementsfor different viscosity control systems.

2.3.2.1 One channel irlpul, relays oulpul

The input is the 4 .. 20 mA signal from the viscosity sensorelectronics, representingthe actual fuel viscosiry.
The control action ofthe viscosity controller is performedby two relay contactsto open or close the valve in
the steamor thermalliquid line.

Analogueinput for temperatureand analogueoutputsfor viscosityandtemperatureare availableas

an option.

2.3.2.2 One channelinput,curuentoutput

The input is the 4 ..20 rnA signalfrom the viscositysensorelectronics, representing
the actualfuel viscosity.
The controlactionof the viscositycontrolleris perforrned
by a4..20 mA controlsignalto openor closethe
valvein the steamor thennalliquid line.

Analogueinput for ternperature

and analogueoutputsfor viscosifyand temperatureare availableas
an option.
2.3.2.3 Two channelinput, relays output
The inputsare the 4.. 20 mA signalfrom the viscositysensorelectronics, representing
the actualfuel
viscosityandthe 4 ..20 mA signalfrom the temperature transmitter.
The controlactionof the viscositycontrolleris performedby two relay contactsto openor closethe valve in
the steamor thermalliquid line.

2.3.2.4 Two channelinput,currentoutputTheinputsarethe 4 ..20 mA signalfrom the viscositysensor

electronics,
representingthe actualfuel viscosityand the 4 ..20 rnA signalfrom the temperature
transmitter.
The controlactionof the viscositycontrolleris performedby a4..20 rnA controlsignalto openor closethe
valvein the steamor thennalliquid line.

2.3.3 Controlvalve for steamor thennalliquid

The controlvalve regulatesthe flow of steamor thermalliquid to the fuel heater. The valve actuatoris driven
by a bi-directionalelectricmotor.
In the eventof an electricpower failurethe controlvalve remainsin its lastobtainedposition, thus enabling
the systemto remainon H.F.O.,while maintainingthe possibilityof controllingthe valve by meansof the
manualoverride. For thermalliquid the valve is equippedwith a bellowsseal.
For IOM informationof the controlvalve for steamor thermaloil suppliedwith your controlsystem, referto
the separate
manualsuppliedwith the valve.

2.3.4 Analosueviscositvindicator
The viscosity controller displays the actual dynamic viscosity in mPa.s.The analogviscosity indicator can be
usedto obtain a read-outofthe kinematic viscosity in cSt, degreesEngler or Sec.Redwoodl. The kinematic
viscosity is calculatedwith a specific gravity of 0.99 at 15"C.
The input signal for the indicator is the 4 .. 20 mA signal from the viscosity sensorelectronics.
The indicator can also be supplied with free adjustablealarm contacts.
For further information refer to the instructionssuppliedwith the instrument.

2.3.5 Viscosityrecorder
For registrationofthe viscosity and optionally also the temperatureofthe fuel oil, a recordercan be installed.
The input ofthe recorder is the 4 .. 20 mA signal from the viscosity sensorelectronics.
The recordercan also be supplied with free adjustablealarm contacts.
For further information refer to th€ instructionssupplied with the instrument.

6.7 CONTROLLEROPTIMIZATION

6.7.1 Manualopttimazatian
An optimum adaptationofthe control parameters(P,l) is necessaryin order to balancean appearingdeviation
as quickly,non-oscillatingand exactlyas possible, accordingto the give operationconditions.
Generally theseadjustmentsrequire a lot of professionalknowledge that cannot be replacementby this brief
information. The following information is for help purposeonly:

P : proportional band Pb (%):

Lower value: longerirnpulses,more sensitivereaction
Highervalue: shorterimpulses,lesssensitivereaction
Examples: - Oscillatingtemperaturewithout distinctinitial overshot:Pb too low;
- The set point is reachedvery slowly after initial exceeding:Pb too high.

I = integralactiontime Ti (min):
Lower value: shorter impulse gaps, faster balancing
Highervalue: longerimpulsegaps,slowerbalancing
Examples: the set value is reachedvery slowly without overshooting:Tn too high;
high initial overshotfollowed by fading oscillation: Tn too low.
