2.2 SYSTEM COMPONENTS
The ViscoSenset*
viscosirysystemconsistsofi
o the combinedviscosityand temperaturemeasuringsensor
o the sensorhousing
. Interfacebox
The sensorhousing is made ofductile iron and has flanges for direct mounting in the fuel line. The sensor
itself is made of stainlesssteel and is mounted in the housing. Two parts ofthe sensor, the pendulum and
floMube have a specialteflon coating. It is supplied with 5 metresofsignal cable for connectionto the
interface box. The ViscoSenseoInterfacebox is a wall mount electronic unit, processingthe signalsfrom and
to the sensor. It provides 4..20 mA signalsfor remote read-outofviscosity and temperaturefor a controller or
other systemelements.Seeseparatetechnical manualsfor a descriptionofthese components.

5. LINPACKING
Let the instrumentsacclimatizein the locationwherethey are going to be installedfor at leastone
hourinsidetheirshipment box.Thisis to avoidmoisture
buildupinsidetheinstrument, or on theconnectors
andwires.
When the equipmentis takenout of the box, pleaseleavethe transportlockingcap and the outsideprotection,
in placeas long as possibleto avoid any darnage.
The ViscoSense'o'sensorhasa specialteflonG'coatingon the pendulumand the flow tube.
Damageof the coatingwill influencethe working of the sensor.
The transport locking cap and the outside protection should be stored, in the unlikely event the equipmenthas
to be retumed for renair.
A ViscoSense@ unit may be part ofa complete VAF viscosity control system. For information and instructions

6.2 CONDITIONSFORCORRECTWORKING OF THE VISCOSENSE.&
SENSOR
The flow should be in-betweenthe maximum and minimum fluid flow rate as mentionedin chapter3
The ViscoSenseohousing should be placed in such a way, that no air can be trapped in the housing. This can
easilyhappenifthe innerdiameterofthe piping is smallerthanthe inner diameterofthe ViscoSense'
housing,if it hasbeeninstalledhorizontally.
Ifthe innerdiameterofthe piping is differentthan the inner diameterofthe ViscoSenseD housing, the
transitionsbetweenthe two diametersshould be tapered.
The fluid shouldbe homogenous.
It should not contain any air bubblesor foam.
The fluid shouldnot containany chemicalsor solid particals, that can damageteflon@.
6.3 GENERALINSTALLATIONRECOMMENDATIONS
o Mount the ViscoSenseahousingas low as possible.in the fuel system.
r Compare your processvariableswith the specifications.Make sure theseare compatible!
r Pressurepulsationsand variationsshouldbe avoidedas much as possible.
r Mechanicalvibrationsshouldbe avoidedas much as possible.
o No specialtools are required to install the ViscoSenseo.Ensurethat your standardtools are fit for
thejob.
. Make sure that the working environment is clean. Ensurethat no dirt can enterthe sensor.
o Insulatethe pipes and the sensorhousing well, to avoid any temperatureloss ofthe fluid.
. When fuel viscosity is 500 mPa.sor thicker it is recommendedto wrap steamtracing with
sufficientcapacity.or 20 Wans/metreresistancewiring aroundthe ViscoSensec housing.
. VAF ViscoSense*sensorand interfacebox are precision instruments.Handle them with care.
& Do not unscrewthe cableglandon the top of the ViscoSenset* sensoror disconnectthe cable
from the sensor. This will violatethe correctoperationof the ViscoSensesensor.
& Take carethat the pendulurnis not damagedand the torsiontube not bent by mechanicalforce.
This will violatethe ViscoSense'o'
sisnal.
6.4.1 ViscoSenseiinterfacebox
1. Installthe ViscoSense'o'
interfacebox in a suitablelocation,free from excessivevibrations,humidityand
excessivetemperaturevariations.
2. The rnaximumdistancebetweensensorand the interfacebox is detenninedbv the cablelenethfrorn the
sensor,beingapprox.5 metres.
3. Allow sufficientspacefor installationof cablesand for servicing.

15.4 HOW TO TAKE A HFO SAMPLEFORANALYSIS
The HFO samplemust always be taken from the circulation systemas close as possibleto the viscosity
sensor.Never take a samplefrom the bunker, settleor day tank.
The HFO samplemust be collected and stored in a clean bottle or samplecontainer. The bottle or sample
containermust be sealedin order to prevent contaminationwith other products. The samplequantity must be
at least200m1.
Write down the actual viscosity and temperaturereadingwhen the sampleis taken. Sendthe sealedbottle or
samplecontainerwith actual readingsto a qualified laboratoryor to VAF InstrumentsB.V. for analysis.
15.5 DIAGNOSTICINFORMATION
The printedcircuit boardinsidethe ViscoSense@ controllerhasa provisionfor diagnosticindication.Failures
and errors are displayedby a blinking digit or characteron a 7 segmentLED. Dependenton the type of
failure, error or warning, the viscosity and/or temperatureoutputs will go to 0,4 or 20 mA, or will remain
functioningnormally.
Ifthere is no failure, error or warning, the display indicatesthe stateofthe program by displaying a symbol
(not blinking) on the display.
The following symbols are displayedduring normal operation:
The decimalpoint at the bottomof the displayis alwayson after power is on. This point is only turnedoff
while the ViscoSenseo is writingto EEPROM,and if no measurement is possibledueto extensiveexternal
vibrations.
24
Nonnally the ViscoSense'o'electronics
will try to restartthe unit if a faulty situationoccurs. However,if the
fault is persistentcontactVAF Instrumentsor your local authorisedVAF dealerand give a detailed
descriptionof the problemthat occurredand the diagnosticinfonnationindicatedat the I segmentLED.
The faults, indicatedin the tablebelow, are listedin orderof priority. The faultson top of the list havethe
highestpriority. This meansthat faultswith a lower priority can be overwrittenby faultsof a higherpriority.
At power-onthe systernis explicitlytestedfor failuresindicatedby displaymessages| ,2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and7.
