Fan Unit SDS-M0440 / SDS-M0441 safetec
1 General Description

1 General Description
The fan units SDS-M0440 and SDS-M0441 are „duplicate sample extraction fans“ for „Sample Extraction Smoke
Detection Systems“ as defined in FSS-Code Chapter 10 and in RESOLUTION MSC.292(87). They are used for
drawing air samples through pipelines from cargo holds to a smoke detection panel and after passing the smoke
detection panel conveying the air samples to free air.

The fan units SDS-M0440 and SDS-M0441 are identical in construction, however SDS-M0440 shall be connected
to 220/230V 50/60Hz supplies and SDS-M0441 shall be connected to 110/115V 60Hz supplies.

The fan units are designed according EN 14986 for drawing air from hazardous areas. However they must be
installed in a safe area. For more details see below.

The fan units are compound of two fans located in a common housing, consisting of one ventilator and one
electric motor each. Only one fan is running at the time. However the fans will be switched over at regular
intervalls controlled by the smoke detection panel. If one fan fails, the smoke detection panel will switch over to
the standby fan automatically. The motors are protected by internal temperature switches, which interrupt the
motor circuits when the motor temperature has reached a certain value.

The air supply and exhaust connections are located on the upper side of the fan unit. An internal flap
automatically connects the exhaust connection to the running fan.

The enclosures of the fan units are compound of an upper and a lower part, between which a profile gasket cares
for the tightness of the enclosure. The construction of the fan units cares for a low-pressure at the profile
gasket and at both motor shaft seals while one fan is running. Thus in case of any leakage the air passes
from the safe side to the hazardous side.

The layout of the fan unit cares for a sufficient gap between rotating parts and the enclosure. If
however the enclosure of the fan unit is damaged in any way, the fan unit bears the risk of
ignition of the potentially hazardous atmosphere inside the fan unit.

The fan unit is mounted on vibration dampers.

The following fan unit versions are available:

7 Installation

7 Installation
• The environment temperature of the installation location must not exceed 45°C.
• The typical installation location is the CO2 room.
• If the fan unit shall be installed outside, it must only be mounted in a special housing with natural
ventilation (Art. No. SDS02.445 and SDS02.446). Care must be taken, that the housing is not located in
direct sun light.
• The fan unit must only be installed in horizontal position on its vibration dampers.
• Free airflow around the fan unit and at the cooling fan of the motors must not be constrained.
• The pipes which connect fan unit with smoke detection panel, extension panels and air out must be of
conductive material. The pipes must have conductive connections and must be connected to conductive
earth.
• As protection against foreign material, the connections of the fan unit must have a protection degree of
IP20 acc. EN 60529.
At the “AIR IN” connection of the fan unit, the protection is typically realized by the pipe connection to
the smoke detection panel or extension panel.
At the “AIR OUT” connection of the fan unit, the protection must be realized by other suitable means
(i.e. with a suitable check valve or a separate grid).
• In case of potential dust contamination of sucked air or in case of potential cakings at the impellers,
which result in unbalanced impellers, pre-filters must be mounted (Art.No. BG02.861).
• If dust contamination of sucked air or cakings at the impellers cannot be excluded, for example by means
of pre-filters, hoses and pipes must be of conductive material and must be earthed. Fittings must be of
conductive material and must be earthed, if the internal surface of the fitting exceeds 100cm².
Please observe TRBS 2153 (“Technische Regeln für Betriebssicherheit”) and Technical Report CLC / TR

8 Commissioning

8 Commissioning
• Check fan unit for any damage, specially transport damage and corrosion. Do not switch on a fan unit
with any deformation of the enclosure or with corroded parts.
• Check tightness of pipe connections between the smoke detection panel / extension panel,
the fan unit and the outlet to free air with leakage detection spray while the fan unit is
running.

Commissioning checklist:
Step No. Description OK
1 Check fan unit for any damage or corrosion. Do not switch on a fan unit with any
deformation of the enclosure and with corroded parts.

2 Check, that the environment temperature of the installation space is limited to 45°C.

3 Check, that the rubber vibration dampers are in good condition.

4 Check, that the fan unit is securely mounted on its vibration dampers in horizontal
position.

5 Check, that the fan unit is properly connected to protective earth.

6 Check, that the pipes between fan unit and smoke detection panel, extension panels
and air out are conductive and properly connected to protective earth.

7 Check, that the fan unit is protected against ingress of foreign particles (min. IP20).

8 In case of potential dust contamination of sucked air: check whether pre-filters are
mounted (Art.No. BG02.861).

9 Check tightness of pipe connections between the smoke detection panel / extension
panel, the fan unit and the outlet to free air with leakage detection spray while the
fan unit is running.

10 Check the motor bearings and the complete fan unit for irregular vibrations and
unusual running noise. For more details please refer to ISO 14694:2003.
safetec recommends to measure vibrations on a regular base with a vibration
meter (Art. No. B06.970).

9 Switch Off Fan Unit or Smoke Detection System

Before the fan unit may be switched off, the smoke detection panel, the extension panels and the fan unit must be
relieved from potentially hazardous atmosphere. This can be done by opening the doors of the
smoke detection panel and the extension panels while the fan unit is still running. The door of the
panel with the farest distance to the fan unit must be opened first, and then the panel with the
remaining farest distance and so on. Let the fan unit run for further 2 minutes after the doors have been opened.
Thus the panels and the fan unit will be filled with clean air from non hazardous atmosphere and the fan unit can
be switched off without the risque of hazardous atmosphere spreading into the installation space.

10 Maintenance

10 Maintenance
To keep the fan unit in a safe condition during its lifetime, it is of utmost importance to
examine the fan unit in regular intervals. If the fan unit is being operated under critical
conditions (i.e. suction of dust, risque of corrosion), the operator must care for carrying out
the maintenance procedure in appropriate shorter intervals.

• Check fan unit for any damage or corrosion. Stop fan unit operation if fan unit has any deformation of the
enclosure or if parts are corroded.
• If pipes, hoses or fittings of non-conductive material are applied, they must only be cleaned with a wet
cloth.
• If dust or dirt is anticipated in the air samples, the fan unit must be checked regularly for contaminations.
Additional evidence for contamination is given, if the smoke detection panel issues a “dirt” alarm. The
fan unit must be cleaned, if internal and external parts of the fan unit are covered with dirt or dust.
• The sealing between upper and lower part of the enclosure must be checked regularly for damage. If
necessary, the sealings must be exchanged. In case of exchange, only original sealings must be used. The
sealing must be replaced completely. The sealing must not be replaced partially.
• If powder coating is flaked off, repair affected area with paint to avoid corrosion.
• The running noise of the bearings must be checked regularly for irregular sounds to assure unobstructed
operation. If necessary, the motors must be exchanged. Only original motors may be used.
• The motor bearings are calculated for a life cycle of 15 years. Not later than 15 years, the motors must be
replaced. Only original motors may be used.
• Defect or unbalanced impellers must be replaced with original spare parts from the maker of the fan unit.
• Check the condition of the vibration dampers. Exchange the vibration dampers if they are damaged or
worn out.
• Check screwed connections for tightness.
• Check tightness of pipe connections between the smoke detection panel / extension panel, the fan unit and
the outlet to free air with leakage detection spray while the fan unit is running.
