Doctor Kishida:
Hello class! Next week we will be discussing the modern classroom and how
instruction has changed. As computers and tablets have become more common,
the use of keyboards has increased. Some people have started suggesting that
teaching children to write by hand is a waste of time and that children should only
be taught how to type. What is your opinion of this proposal? Should children
only be taught how to type, or is writing by hand still an important skill to learn?
Trevor:
Siobhan:
I agree that typing is a vital skill for students to learn, but writing by hand still has
its place. Teachers give in-class assignments, and not every student has a computer
or tablet to use. They still need to be able to write clearly so that teachers can read
their work. Also, computers need electricity to work, and batteries run out of
energy. If you need to write something down by hand, you need to know how to
write clearly.
