OBJECTIVE
The purpose of a concrete cube test is to determine the Comprehensive Strength of Concrete.
Concrete cubes are typically made in moulds with dimensions of 150mm x 100mm x 150mm. The
concrete should be tested after 7 days, 14 days and 21 days.
The UPV Test measures the time of travel of an ultrasonic pulse passing through the concrete. The
high UPV Test and lower time of travel indicate good quality of concrete in terms of density,
uniformity, and homogeneity.
STANDARD REFERENCE
BS 1881 - 116:1983 – PART 116: Method for determination of compressive strength of
concrete cube
ASTM C 125: 2019 - Standard Terminology Relating to Concrete and Concrete Aggregates
SIGNIFICANCE
The cube test is to ensure that the concrete meets its expected compressive strength. If the supplier
can’t guarantee quality, then there’s a big risk that the concrete might not be up for the job. It could
crack, crumble or collapse in just a few months.
The Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) test is indeed an in-situ, nondestructive testing method used to
assess the quality and integrity of concrete and natural rocks. This test is particularly valuable in
evaluating the structural soundness and detecting potential defects or anomalies within these
materials.

PROCEDURE
1. Mix sand, aggregate, cement and water to get a concrete mix.
2. Make sure the section are bolted tightly and mold faces are coated with the oil
3. Fill in the mold in 3 layers evenly and tamp 35 times for each layer using tamping rod.
4. Finish off surface using towel and mark the cubes by scoring on the top, just before concrete
sets suitably for future identification.

CONCLUSION
In conclusion, cube test can be performed to determine the concrete mixture’s compressive strength.
Compressive strength is the highest compressive stress that can be sustained without fracture under a
gradually applied load. The compressive strength of concrete can depend on the amounts of fine and
coarse aggregate in the mix.
For UPV test, the introduction of Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) test has revolutionized the way we
assess the quality and integrity of concrete structures. This non-destructive testing method provides
accurate and reliable information on the strength and condition of concrete, helping engineers and
construction professionals make informed decisions regarding maintenance, repair, and structural
design. As technology continues to advance, we can expect even more developments in UPV testing,
making it an indispensable technique for ensuring the longevity and durability of concrete structures.
