Module 4 - Cube Test, Compress Test, Upv Test 1

The document describes procedures for conducting cube tests, compression tests, and UPV tests on concrete samples. Cube tests determine the compressive strength of concrete cubes after 7, 14, and 21 days of curing. Compression tests are then performed on the cubes to calculate compressive stress and compare to theoretical strength values. UPV tests measure ultrasonic pulse velocity to assess concrete quality and homogeneity. The tests found the concrete samples met the expected compressive strengths and UPV results indicated good quality concrete.

OBJECTIVE
The purpose of a concrete cube test is to determine the Comprehensive Strength of Concrete.
Concrete cubes are typically made in moulds with dimensions of 150mm x 100mm x 150mm. The
concrete should be tested after 7 days, 14 days and 21 days.
The UPV Test measures the time of travel of an ultrasonic pulse passing through the concrete. The
high UPV Test and lower time of travel indicate good quality of concrete in terms of density,
uniformity, and homogeneity.

STANDARD REFERENCE
 BS 1881 - 116:1983 – PART 116: Method for determination of compressive strength of
concrete cube
 ASTM C 125: 2019 - Standard Terminology Relating to Concrete and Concrete Aggregates

SIGNIFICANCE
The cube test is to ensure that the concrete meets its expected compressive strength. If the supplier
can’t guarantee quality, then there’s a big risk that the concrete might not be up for the job. It could
crack, crumble or collapse in just a few months.
The Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) test is indeed an in-situ, nondestructive testing method used to
assess the quality and integrity of concrete and natural rocks. This test is particularly valuable in
evaluating the structural soundness and detecting potential defects or anomalies within these
materials.

EQUIPMENT
 Cube concrete
 Scoop
 Sampling tray
 Shover / mixer
 Tamping rod
 Brush
 Weight balance
 Curing tank
 Compression test machine
 Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity Equipment

MATERIALS
 Sand
 Aggregate
 Cement
 Water

PROCEDURE
1. Mix sand, aggregate, cement and water to get a concrete mix.
2. Make sure the section are bolted tightly and mold faces are coated with the oil

3. Fill in the mold in 3 layers evenly and tamp 35 times for each layer using tamping rod.

4. Finish off surface using towel and mark the cubes by scoring on the top, just before concrete
sets suitably for future identification.

 Days ( 7 days / 14 days / 21 days )
 Group etc MOON

5. Then leave in the mold with concrete for 24 hours.

6. After 24 hours, open the concrete cube and place all the cubes in to the curing tank for 7, 14,
21 days.
7. Repeat procedure 1 – 6 for UPV test.
8. After 7 days, remove the test cube from the curing tank and dry the concrete cube under
sunlight for a few minutes.
9. Place the cube centrally on the lower platen of the compression test machine with the rough
top surface of the test cube facing toward you.
10. Lower the top platen onto the cube and ensure a uniform setting and make sure the test
machine is set to the correct loading. Closed the test machine door for avoid any injury.
11. Repeat procedure 6 – 9 for concrete cube 14 days and 21 days. Record all data.
12. For UPV test, spread grease on the surface of the concrete to be tested, to enhance surface
contact with the transducers.
13. Place the transmitter on the marked position and the receiver on the opposite side of the beam
and record the time taken for the ultrasonic pulse to travel from the transmitter through the
thickness of the cube to the receiver.

CONCLUSION
In conclusion, cube test can be performed to determine the concrete mixture’s compressive strength.
Compressive strength is the highest compressive stress that can be sustained without fracture under a
gradually applied load. The compressive strength of concrete can depend on the amounts of fine and
coarse aggregate in the mix.

For UPV test, the introduction of Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) test has revolutionized the way we
assess the quality and integrity of concrete structures. This non-destructive testing method provides
accurate and reliable information on the strength and condition of concrete, helping engineers and
construction professionals make informed decisions regarding maintenance, repair, and structural
design. As technology continues to advance, we can expect even more developments in UPV testing,
making it an indispensable technique for ensuring the longevity and durability of concrete structures.
