1.0 Introduction

Traditional home environments and professional settings are increasingly mixing in the rapidly
changing world of remote work and entrepreneurship. In today's fast-paced world, converting
your home into a corporate hub or Small Office/Home Office (SOHO) setting is more than
important. Creating an efficient and well-designed space within your home may enhance
productivity, encourage creativity, and provide the ideal backdrop for the ever-expanding
possibilities of the modern work era.

Setting up a suitable Local Area Network (LAN) would allow for more efficient and effective
operations. A well-designed LAN would include several wired and wireless devices throughout
the office that are customized to the needs of the firm. As the overall cost of a wireless local area
network (WLAN) is extremely low and affordable nowadays.

This approach of transforming one's own home into a dynamic and productive workplace is one
that fits well with the changing nature of how we live and work today. Let's have a look at how
you might combine your home and your work goals to create a pleasant and profitable SOHO
environment.
2.0 Requirement Gathering
When it comes to the aspects of WLAN site surveys, the planning of the survey should follow
Cisco's guidelines (Site Survey standards for WLAN Deployment, 2021). To begin, we must
establish core needs, customer facility requirements, and client device type requirements. There
are numerous critical issues to bear in mind when considering a WLAN infrastructure
deployment for a Small Office/Home Office (SOHO) setting.

2.1 Primary Requirements

Infrastructure connectivity is an important aspect in a company. The devices selected for the
SOHO network should be compatible with each other and support the necessary protocols and
standards. This includes the SOHO switch, router, NICs, and other devices. Additional Wireless
Access Points or a more powerful access point may be required to ensure coverage throughout
the entire space. While Wi-Fi provides greater mobility, an Ethernet connection is generally
faster and provides greater reliability and security.

An Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) is essential for the servers to continue working properly
in case of any power failure or outage.
2.2 Customer Facility Requirements
Creating a Small Office/Home Office (SOHO) environment with a strong focus on customer
satisfaction necessitates paying close attention to a number of crucial factors. To begin with,
having easily available contact channels, such as email, phone, and instant messaging, provides
rapid response to client requests and issues. Building client trust requires a professional and user-
friendly website with clear contact information and support resources.

2.3 Requirements Analysis

Devices Unit
Computer 10
Laptop 2
Printer 2
Wireless Access Point 1
Router 1
Switch 1
Phone 1
2.4 Protocols

These protocols play a vital role in the functioning of a SOHO network, enabling efficient and
secure communication and data transfer.

1. HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol):

HTTP is used to access the internet in a SOHO setting. It is a protocol used to send
hypertext across the internet and serves as the cornerstone of all data exchange on the
Web. Building APIs that expose services and data is made possible by the robust HTTP
platform. It is widely used, adaptable, and basic.

2. DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol):

DHCP allows hosts connected to a network, whether wired or wireless, to get IP
addresses automatically. When a SOHO device uses DHCP to request network
connectivity, it sends a request that is received by a DHCP server. This server then
assigns the device an IP address and other network characteristics.

3. SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol):

Email applications may send emails via a designated server thanks to the SMTP protocol.
If you want to send emails from your Soho Mail account to another email client in a
SOHO environment, you will need to set up the client's settings to include Soho's SMTP
information.

4. FTP (File Transfer Protocol):

FTP is a TCP/IP protocol used to facilitate file transfers between computers. It allows the
transfer of software, data, and text files between computer types and provides users with
access to directories or folders on remote computers in a SOHO context.
3.0 Floor Diagram

Firstly, this is the floor plan that our group created to show our SOHO environment. Given that
there will be 10-15 employees in the office, the network should be robust enough to handle that
many simultaneous connections. A kitchen is near to the workstation so staff can have their short
breaks. There is also a conference room for any meeting with the staff too. Additionally, the
hardware, including a printer and a phone, is provided for the convenience of the staff.
Moreover, the manager room is near to the staff’s workstation so it can monitor the workers.
Lastly, the servers and switch are placed in an air conditioning room to keep the servers cool.
4.0 Site Survey

Three categories of site surveys exist: passive, active, and predictive. There is an ongoing site
survey at the moment. An active site survey was carried out since it was connected to the current
access point (AP) at the area that was going to be turned into an office. For the first trip, Ekahau
HeatMapper was used for the survey. You are free to move around the facility, explore the
network of several access points that are within the survey equipment's range, and click on your
position on the floor map. To determine any difficult or dead zones and to evaluate how the walls
affect coverage, a preliminary tour is conducted. As you can see, the entire area may be covered
by the access point.
5.0 Network Infrastructure Diagram

After finishing the program requirements stage, we created the network configuration for
our SOHO environment. The Cisco Packet Tracer tool was used to design the WLAN
architecture. As shown in Figure 4, our SOHO is separated into four sections: the Server Room,
the Conference Room, the Work Area, and the Manager Room.

The switch and router have been installed in the server room, along with a server that
saves all of the data collected and used in day-to-day operations. Following that, the conference
room contains one laptop that will be utilized for any meetings sessions. Aside from that, an IP
phone is put in the room for an employee or management to use if they need to make or receive a
call.

There are 10 PCs in the work area for the 10 employees, each connection with copper
straight-through connections, allowing the staff to operate more quickly and effectively. A
printer has also been installed in the work area and is wirelessly connected for the convenience
of the management. Finally, at the manager's office, there is just one laptop linked wirelessly to
an access point, which is also connected to the switch via copper straight-through wires.
