Title:

To inspect the wire clothing on different rollers of card.

Abstract:
In this experiment, the wire arrangements on the different rollers of the carding machine like taker-in,
cylinder, doffer and revolving flats were inspected with the help of pick glass. Their shape, profile and
dimensions were also determined. A line diagram was drawn to understand the function of wire point on
rollers.

Introduction:
The carding is the second process of spinning which converts fed material (lap) into the uniform strand
of fibres called “sliver”. The good quality carding of cotton is very important because the yarn quality
very much depends upon it. The neps percentage in the yarn varies according to the quality of carding
process. "The carding is called the heart of spinning". In the carding process, the material gets passed
through a carding machine. The fibres are made parallel to each other. The fibers tangle in this operation,
thus it makes it possible to remove all types of impurities present in the cotton[1].

For alignment of fiber Card perform the action process that breaks up locks and unorganized clumps of
fiber and then aligns the individual fibers so that they are more or less parallel with each other. The pin
which is used to cover the surface of carding roller such as taker in, cylinder, doffer and are of fine in
diameter, spaced closely and bended in shape is defined as card clothing[2].

Objectives:
The major objectives of the card clothing are[1];

 Opening by point to point action


 Cleaning due to opening
 Transfer of material by point to back action
 Cleaning of the wire by back to back action
Types of Card Clothing:
There are three types of card clothing which are given below[2];

 Flexible card clothing


 Semi-rigid card clothing
 Metallic card clothing

Experimental Material:
 Pick glass
 Chalk
 Measuring tape

Methodology:
 Took pick glass which was about 1 inch in length
 Took a chalk and marked a point on main cylinder of carding machine and measured its length
 Also took measurements of taker-in, doffer and revolving flats using measuring tape and chalk
 Now put pick glass on one revolving flat and counted number of wire points in one inch
 Then, wire points of doffer, cylinder and taker-in were counted
 Diagram of wire points was drawn to understand its function

Result and Discussion:


Wire points of taker-in, revolving flats and doffer were studied and understood their working. Number of
wire points in them is given below

Points on taker-In = 12 points/inch

Length of one revolving flat = 40 inches


Total revolving flats = 90
Number of wire points in one revolving flat = 60 points/inch
Total wire points on revolving flats = 60 x 40 = 2400 points/inch
Number of wire points on doffer = 420 points/inch2

Conclusion:
Wire points on different rollers of carding machine were determined using pick glass and understood their
functioning. Wire points aligned the fibers and used in fiber to fiber opening. Thisdepend upon their
direction of motion which was also determined.
