Type 1. Problems on stresses and strain.

1. A hollow cylinder 2 m long has an outside diameter of 50mm and inside diameter of
30mm. If the cylinder is carrying a load of 25 KN. Find the stress in cylinder, also
find deformation of the cylinder E=100 Gpa.
2. In an experiment a steel specimen of 13mm diameter was found to elongate 0.2mm in
a 200 mm gauge length when it was subjected to a force of 26.8 KN. If specimen was
tested within elastic range, Calculate Young's modulus for the steel
3. Bar 500mm long and 22mm in diameter is elongated by 1.2mm under the effect of
axial pull of 105 KN. Calculate stress, strain and modulus of elasticity
4. A mild steel flat 75mm wide, 150mm thickness and 1.5 m long is subjected to pull of
45 KN. If elongation of flat is 0.6380mm. Find the young's modulus.

Problems on Stepped Cross-section

5. A copper bar shown in figure is subjected to a tensile load of 30 KN. Determine


elongation of the bar if E=100GPa. Also find maximum stress induced.

6. A copper bar 900mm long and circular in section. It consists of 200mm long bar of 40
mm diameter,500 mm long bar of 15 mm diameter and 200mm long bar of 30mm
diameter. If the bar is subjected to a tensile load of 60kN, Find the total extension of
the bar. Take E=100GPa
7. steel rod is subjected to axial load of 50 kN. Total length of rod is 4m. First 1m has
diameter 32mm, second 1m has diameter 28mm and remaining part has diameter
25mm. If Young's modulus of material is 2 × 105 N/mm2 .Find elongation of the rod.
8. A stepped bar ABCD consists of three parts AB, BC and CD such that Ab is 300mm
long and 20mm diameter, BC is 400mm long and 30mm diameter and CD is 200 mm
long and 40 mm diameter. It was observed that the stepped bar undergoes a
deformation of 0.42mm when it was subjected to a compressive load of P N. Find the
value of P if E=200 GPa.
9. A bar of uniform cross sectional area 100mm2 is subjected to forces as shown below.
Calculate the change in the length of the bar. Young’s modulus of material is 2 × 105
N/mm2

10. A steel bar of 20mm diameter is loaded as shown in figure. Determine the stresses in
each part and the total elongation. Take E=210 GPa.

11. A bronze bar is fastened between a steel bar and an aluminium bar as shown in Fig.
below. Axial loads are applied at the positions indicated. Find the largest value of P
that will not exceed an overall deformation of 3.0 mm, or the following stresses: 140
MPa in the steel, 120 MPa in the bronze, and 80 MPa in the aluminium. Assume that
the assembly is suitably braced to prevent buckling. Use Est = 200 GPa, Eal = 70
GPa, and Ebr = 83 GPa.

Elastic constants and thermal stress

14. A rectangular steel block is 3 inches long in the x direction, 2 inches long in the y
direction, and 4 inches long in the z direction. The block is subjected to a triaxle loading of
three uniformly distributed forces as follows: 48 kips tension in the x direction, 60 kips
compression in the y direction, and 54 kips tension in the z direction. If ν = 0.30 and E = 29 ×
106 psi, determine the single uniformly distributed load in the x direction that would produce
the same deformation in the y direction as the original loading.

15. An alloy bar 6m long is held between two supports by a steel rod 25 mm diameter passing
through metal plates and nuts at each end. The rod is held at temp. of 100 0 C. Determine the
stress in the rod, when the temperature falls down to 60 0 C, if

(i) do not yield

(ii) yield by 1 mm.

Take the value of e and alpha for the alloy as 200 GPa and alpha = 12x10-6 /K .

16. A steel bar of 30 mm diameter is heated to 800 C and then clamped at the ends. It is then
allowed to cool down to 300 c. During cooling, only 1 mm contraction was allowed.
Calculate the temperature stress developed and reaction at the clamps. Take the value of e
and alpha for the alloy as 200 GPa and 12x10-6 /K. Take length of bar 10 meters.

Composite bar

17. A reinforced concrete circular column of 350 mm diameter has 6 steel bars of 16 mm
diameter embedded in it. Find the maximum load which the column can carry, if the stresses
in steel and concrete are not to exceed 110 MPa and 4.5 MPa respectively. Take modulus of
elasticity of steel as 17 times that of concrete.

18. Two copper rods and one steel rod together support a load of 300kN as shown in figure.
Find the stresses in the rod. Take Es=200Gpa and Ec=100Gpa

19. A copper rod of 30mm diameter and 400 mmm is enclosed in a steel tube of internal
diameter 30mm and thickness 10mm and are rigidly attached to act as a composite bar. The
bar is subjected to axial load of 200kN(tensile).

Find a) stresses in each material

b) loads shared by each material

c) Elongation of the composite.

20. A load of 300 kN is carried by a short concrete column 275 mm x 275 mm in size. The
column is reinforced with 6 bars of 20 mm diameter. Find the stresses in concrete and steel, if
the modulus of elasticity for the steel is 17 times that of concrete. If the stress in concrete is
not to exceed 4 MPa, find the area of steel required, so that the column may carry a load of
450 kN.

21. A reinforced concrete column 450 mm x 450 mm in section is reinforced with 4 steel bars
of 20 mm diameter, one in each corner. The column is carrying a load of 1250 kN. Find the
stresses in the concrete and steel bars. Take E for steel = 200 GPa and E for concrete = 18
GPa.

Type 2. Problems on torsion

1. A solid steel shaft in a rolling mill transmits 20 kW of power at 2 Hz. Determine the
smallest safe diameter of the shaft if the shear stress τw is not to exceed 40 MPa and
the angle of twist θ is limited to 6°in a length of 3 m. Use G = 83 GPa.

4. The shaft in Fig. below consists of a 3-in. -diameter aluminum segment that is rigidly
joined to a 2-in. -diameter steel segment. The ends of the shaft are attached to rigid
supports, Calculate the maximum shear stress developed in each segment when the
torque T = 10 kip in. is applied. Use G = 4×106 psi for aluminum and G = 12×106 psi
for steel.

5. The composite shaft consists of a steel section 25mm in diameter and an aluminium
section 50mm in diameter. The ends of the shaft are fixed so that rotation cannot
occur there.

Determine

(a) the resisting torques exerted by the supports on the shaft and

8. A compound shaft is made of an aluminium rod, 40 mm diameter, and l m long, and a


steel rod, 20 mm diameter, and 1.5 m long. If the maximum permissible shear stresses
in aluminium and steel are 40 MPa and 90 MPa, and G is 28 GPa and 85 GPa,
respectively, find the maximum torque that can be applied as shown. Also find the
angle of twist between A and B.

Type 3. Bending moment and shear force

1. A cantilever, of span 5 m, carries loads as shown in Fig. below. Draw the SF and BM
diagrams for the beam.

2. A simply supported (SS) beam has a span of 10m and carries the loadings as shown in
Fig. Draw SF and BM diagrams indicating salient values. Find the position and
magnitude of the maximum BM in the beam.

3. Draw the SF and BM diagrams for the beam loaded as shown in Fig.

4. A 10m long overhanging beam is loaded as shown in Fig. Draw the SF and BM
diagrams. Find the location and magnitude of the maximum BM and locate the point
of contra flexure in the BM diagram.

5. A beam, 14 m long, is supported at 2 m and 12 m from the left end. It carries UD


loads of 20 kN/m over both overhanging lengths in addition to a clockwise couple
load of 200 kN m at mid-span. Draw the SF and BM diagrams for the beam. Find the
position and magnitudes of maximum BMs and the position of the point of contra
flexure.

6. A beam 10m long is supported at the left end and at 8 m from the left end. It carries a
load uniformly varying from zero at the left support to 60 kN/m at the right support,
and a UD load of 30 kN/m over the overhanging length.

12. The simply supported beam in Fig. (a) has the T-shaped cross section shown.
Determine the values and locations of the maximum tensile and compressive bending
stresses.

13. An unsymmetrical I-section has a top flange of dimensions 100 mm x 10 mm, bottom
flange 60 x 10 mm and web 180 mm x 10 mm. If it is used as a cantilever and the
permissible stress is 120 N/mm2, find the maximum span of the cantilever if the load
including the self-weight is 10 kN/m.
