Mock Midterm Term 1 – Mathematics for Engineering

Date: 07-10-2022
Time: 60 minutes

Please read carefully:

This exam consists of 4 exercises, for a total number of 22 points. At each exercise,
it is indicated how many points can be obtained for this question. This is also
indicated for each sub-question. Your grade will be calculated using the formula:
number of obtained points
Exam grade = ⋅ 90 + 10.
22

Allowed material: Pen, pencil, geotriangle (protractor), ruler, eraser,

compass, formula sheet (next page).

Clearly state how you arrive at your answers. In case you do not provide
computations/explanations, 0 points will be awarded for that question. Always
simplify your answer as much as possible, unless stated otherwise.
Perhaps more important, we wish you good luck with the exam!

Sum and difference identities

sin(𝑡 + 𝑢) = sin(𝑡) cos(𝑢) + cos(𝑡) sin(𝑢).
sin(𝑡 − 𝑢) = sin(𝑡) cos(𝑢) − cos(𝑡) sin(𝑢).
cos(𝑡 + 𝑢) = cos(𝑡) cos(𝑢) − sin(𝑡) sin(𝑢).
cos(𝑡 − 𝑢) = cos(𝑡) cos(𝑢) + sin(𝑡) sin(𝑢).

Product-to-Sum formulas
1
cos(𝑡) cos(𝑢) = (cos(𝑡 − 𝑢) + cos(𝑡 + 𝑢)).
2
1
sin(𝑡) cos(𝑢) = (sin(𝑡 + 𝑢) + sin(𝑡 − 𝑢)).
2
1
sin(𝑡) sin(𝑢) = (cos(𝑡 − 𝑢) − cos(𝑡 + 𝑢)).
2
1
cos(𝑡) sin(𝑢) = (sin(𝑡 + 𝑢) − sin(𝑡 − 𝑢)).

Sum-to-product formulas
𝑡+𝑢 𝑡−𝑢
sin(𝑡) + sin(𝑢) = 2 sin ( ) cos ( ).
2 2
𝑡−𝑢 𝑡+𝑢
sin(𝑡) − sin(𝑢) = 2 sin ( ) cos ( ).
2 2
𝑡+𝑢 𝑡−𝑢
cos(𝑡) − cos(𝑢) = −2 sin ( ) sin ( ).
2 2
𝑡+𝑢 𝑡−𝑢
cos(𝑡) + cos(𝑢) = 2 cos ( ) cos ( ).

Double-Angle identities
sin(2𝑡) = 2 sin(𝑡) cos(𝑡).
cos(2𝑡) = cos 2 (𝑡) − sin2 (𝑡) = 2 cos2 (𝑡) − 1 = 1 − 2 sin2 (𝑡).
