Starlink Satellite Internet

The document tests the bandwidth capabilities of Starlink satellite internet terminals individually and when aggregated. Two terminals were tested, one in an open sky setup and one obstructed, with the open sky terminal achieving speeds up to 243 Mbps down and the obstructed up to 258 Mbps down. When aggregated using a FatPipe device, speeds up to 416 Mbps down were achieved. The document provides screenshots of speed tests and concludes Starlink can be used as a backhaul solution when multiple terminals are aggregated.

1. Test Objective
The Objective of this testing is to assess the capability of Starlink Satellite Internet to provide an internet
Bandwidth of at least 300Mbps Downlink / 60Mbps Uplink.

By combining two (2) Satellite internet using the Load Balance (FatPipe), the assumed total bandwidth
should be at least 600 Mbps Downlink and 120 Mbps Uplink that could backhaul internet bandwidth.

2. Overview of the Product

Starlink Satellite Internet system is a plug-and-play unit that connects to the global broadband low-
orbit satellite network. One (1) VSAT terminal can deliver bandwidth of up to 300 Mbps Download and 60
Mbps Upload. Startlink Internet satellite aims to deliver global internet coverage. Ideally suited for rural
and geographically isolated areas where Internet connectivity is unreliable and nonexistent.

FatPipe MpVPN device aggregates two or more data lines of any type and utilizes all paths when the
lines are up and running, dynamically balancing traffic over the multiple lines, and intelligently failing over
inbound and outbound IP traffic when ISP services and/or components fail.

3. Test Environment and Tool Used

During testing, there were two scenario set-ups of two (2) Starlink VSAT Terminal, The first VSAT
terminal was set to the ideal position (open sky), and the 2nd terminal was set up in an obstructed
location.

Fatpipe device was set up and configured to aggregate the two (2) Starlink Satellite Internet, to get the
desired result of DL/ UL of 500Mbps/ 120Mbps UL.

Tools: Laptop, Web Internet Speed test (Ookla, Fast.com & Google), and URL for Video Streaming.

4. Testing Scope:
1. Measure DL/ UP of Starlink VSAT terminal 1 (Ideal location Open Sky)

2. Meausre DL/ UL of Starlink Vsat Terminal 2 (obstructed location)

3. Mesure Aggregated DL/ UL over FATPIPE MPVPN

7. Learning During Testing
o Starlink terminal should be required (ideal) to an open sky set-up, to get the best internet
throughput DL/ UL
o Maintain the Antenna distance of at least five (5) meters away from the adjacent Starlink terminal
to avoid interference.
o The IPV4/ IPV6 is working by default on the Starlink satellite Internet
o Static IP addressing mode should be used during the link aggregation with the Fatpipe device.
o Different Internet speed test e.g., Ookla, google, and FAST.com, shows a different result.
o Rain fade affects the propagation of the Starlink terminal which causes degradation of signal and
bandwidth.

8. Recommendation/ Suggestion:
Starlink Satellite Internet can be used as a Backhaul as an interim solution. At least 4 -5 Starlink terminals
are to be aggregated to get the 1 Gbps Download and 200 Mbps upload.

For rural and nonexistent internet service Starlink Satellite Internet is fit for easy and fast deployment.
