Edited Chapter 2

This chapter reviews literature related to work immersion programs. It defines work immersion as an element of the Senior High School curriculum involving 80 hours of hands-on experience or work simulation. This exposes students to actual workplaces and enriches skills developed in school. The chapter also discusses how work immersion relates to internships and on-the-job training in college. Two studies are reviewed, one finding mixed views among participants on readiness for work, and the other linking work immersion experience to employability and career opportunities for graduates. The conceptual framework and definitions of key terms like preparedness, work ethics, competencies and skills are also presented.

CHAPTER 2

Review of Related Literature

Work immersion refers to the part of the Senior High School (SHS) Curriculum consisting of 80

hours of hands-on experience or work simulation which the grades 11and 12 students will

undergo to expose them to the actual workplace setting and to enrich the competencies provided

by the school under the supervision of the school head and the designated personnel of the

partner.

Meanwhile, work immersion is somewhat similar in internship or on-the-job training done by

college students. They have things in common like letting students undergo and experience

actual works in a particular workplace. On the other hand, they differ in some loads and number

of hours they will consume. Therefore, most of the following studies discusses about the on-the-

job training.

(Gill, 2023), Findings indicate that participants have mixed views about their readiness for work,

with some expressing anxiety surrounding their future progression. Despite this, participants

were positive about their preparedness for industry roles, highlighting elements of the practical

and theoretical content of their courses as effective preparation for work. Furthermore, it was

apparent that the participants' non-traditional backgrounds influenced HE experiences and

informed perceptions of readiness and preparedness for transition to work.

In a study by (Garcia, 2020), senior high school graduates of Calamba City participated in Work

Immersion. They explained and correlated efficiency, Work Immersion program alignment, and

career opportunities. The program was discovered to be highly beneficial in terms of

employability, skill utilization, employment status, track alignment, and salary. There is a
significant correlation between the individual qualities, practical expertise, and job applicability

of students, which is correlated significantly with students' preparedness, degree of skill

application, job status, track alignment, waiting period, and salary. Students with greater

individual qualities, practical expertise, and job applicability are more likely to be hired. It is

recommended that academic institutions are driven to continue looking for industries that will

match and enhance the abilities of their learners to allow them to be productively immersed and

ready for potential employment.
