IAS Mains Electrical Engineering 2005

Voltage regulation of a transformer is the ability of a transformer to maintain a constant secondary voltage despite changes in load or primary voltage. It is expressed as the percentage change in secondary voltage from no load to full load. The phasor diagram shows the phase relationship between primary and secondary voltages and currents at lagging power factor. A TRIAC is a bidirectional thyristor that can conduct current in either direction when triggered by a small gate current. It has applications in light dimmers, speed controls, etc. It has advantages over thyristors like bidirectional conduction but also has disadvantages like more complex gate drive requirements. The steps to generate firing pulses for thyristors in an AC to DC converter include sampling the AC input voltage
