Diwali, or Dipawali, is India's biggest and most important holiday of the year. The festival gets
its name from the row (avali) of clay lamps (deepa) that Indians light outside their homes to
symbolize the inner light that protects from spiritual darkness. This festival is very important to
Hindus.

38 CASE STUDY – 3
A lottery (or lotto) is a form of gambling that involves the drawing of numbers at random for a
prize. Some governments outlaw lotteries, while others endorse it to the extent of organizing a
national or state lottery. It is common to find some degree of regulation of lottery by
governments. The most common regulation is prohibition of sale to minors, and vendors must
be licensed to sell lottery tickets. Although lotteries were common in the United States and
some other countries during the 19th century, by the beginning of the 20th century, most forms
of gambling, including lotteries and sweepstakes, were illegal in the U.S. and most of Europe
as well as many other countries. This remained so until well after World War II. In the
1960s, casinos and lotteries began to re-appear throughout the world as a means for
governments to raise revenue without raising taxes. In a lottery in India, 9,999 tickets are sold
every year. A lottery ticket has a combination of four numbers written on it. The host randomly
picks out four numbers in order and finally, a winner is declared.
1. What is the probability getting a ticket with the number combination ‘2009’ written on it 2
and winning the lottery when you buy three tickets?
2. What is the probability of getting a ticket having numbers zero, zero and one written 2
together in order, on it and winning the lottery when you buy two tickets?
