1. Project title

Prevalence rate and economic importance of bovine Hydatidosis in Gurage Zone,

SNNP, Ethiopia

2. Project summary

Parasitic diseases are considered as a major obstacle in health and product

performance of livestock (Berhe, 2009). Among the parasite diseases,
Echinicoccosis/ hydatidosis is a zoonotic parasitic disease caused by the dog
tapeworm Echinococcus and its larval stage, the hydatid cyst. Hydatidosis is one of
parasitic zoonotic disease caused by larval stages of Echinococcus granulosus and
associated with severe economic losses and has great public health significance
worldwide. In Ethiopia, abattoir based studies conducted in various parts of the
country that showed prevalence of hydatidosis in cattle ranges from and
contributing a significant role in lowering the amount and quality of exported
commodities. Echinococcosis can be controlled through preventive measures that
break the cycle between the definitive and the intermediate host. These measures
include deworming dogs, inspecting meat and educating the public on the risk to
humans and on avoiding feeding offal to dogs, as well as introducing legislation.
The country has been identified for a high prevalence of hydatid disease since the
1970s (Bekele, 2010). Moreover, reports of findings from abattoirs in various
locations revealed that hydatidosis is wide spread in Ethiopia with great economic
and public health significance (Kebede et al, 2009). However, no information is
available about the status of hydatidosis in and around Wolkite. Hence it would be
paramount important to have information on the current status of hydatidosis.
General objective

• To assess the overall prevalence of the diseases

Specific objectives

 To investigate the effects of risk factors and prevalence of the disease at

investigation site and organ level
 To overview the economic significance of haydatidosis.
 To characterize potential haydatidosis strains using SNP marker
3. Project (research topic) details
3.1. Research questions
 What is the prevalence rate of hydatidosis on cattle slaughtered in Wolkite
municipal abattoir?
 What risk factors are attributed to the presence of the disease?
 How much money will be lost due to condemnation of infected organs with
hydatid cyst?

3.2. Expected output

 Prevalence rate at the study area and organ level will be determined.
 The attributed risk factor to the disease will be identified.
 Economic loss resulted from the condemned organ will be estimated.
 Optimum protocol for proper prevention and control strategies will be developed.

3.3. Significance of the research

 The abattoirs will follow proper disposal of infected organs to prevent the
occurrence of hydatidosis.
 Level of understanding of impact of hydatidosis be rated and appropriate training
will be designed.
 Appropriate control and preventive strategies will be designed and implemented
by the cattle raisers.
 Appropriate treatment regime for dogs will be designed.
 Amount of condemned edible offal will be reduced and problem of malnutrition will
be minimized
 People will be safeguarded from risk of infection with hydatidosis through prober
handling of dogs.
