CHAPTER I
Introduction

Background of the study

Today the entire world is witnessing stress and its consequence. Bernstein (2008) viewed
stress as a negative emotional, cognitive, behavioral and physiological process that occurs as a
person tries to adjust to or deal with stressors.The effect of academic pressure is understood in
many walks of life with diverse population especially among. Students.Richlin-Klonsky (2003)
reported that “stress haslessened academic performance, hinder with a student’s capability
to involve in and add to campus life, and raise the probability of substance abuse mo and
other potentially destructive behaviors”.Erkutlu(2006) opined that “pressure to perform well
in the examination or test and time allocated makes academic environment very stressful.
One of the major impacts of stress is that it affects psychological functions in turn mental
health of people”. Adolescence is a very critical time in a person’s life as they are going
through numerous Changes whether that be puberty or transitioning into a new level of
school. Going through all of these changes at once can have a toll on the mental health of
adolescents. This is because Adolescents become more sensitive during this time which makes
them vulnerable to the different Stressors that might be present in their lives. Out of all of the
stressors that Adolescents face, one of the most consuming ones revolves around their
academics. Being exposed to these different stressors,Especially academics, leaves adolescents
feeling anxious and worried which may lead to Depression. Mental health disorders such as
Depression and anxiety have become more prominent in the adolescent a grange, as
researchers Have found that a high percentage of all lifetime mental health disorders were
identified for the First time at ages as young as 14-15 years old (Zhu, Haegele, Liu, & Yu 2021).
14-15 years old is in the prime stage of adolescence and it is when most students start their
high school career. Regarding academic pressure, there are many different sources where it
comes from, but there’re some that are more prominent than others. Parental pressure, peer
pressure, and peer Competition for high grades throughout high school and leading up to the
college admissions Process contribute to the development of anxiety and depression in
adolescents.
According to World Health Organization (2014) mental health is viewed as “a state of well-
being in which individuals realize their own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of
life, can work productively and fruitfully, and able to make a contribution to community”.
Gallerist ,et al (2015) defined “mental health as a dynamic state of internal equilibrium
which enables individuals to use their abilities in harmony with universal values of society.
Basic cognitive and social skills; ability to recognize, express and modulate one’s own
emotions, as well as empathize with others; flexibility and ability to cope with adverse life
events and function in social roles; and harmonious relationship between body and mind
represent important components of mental health which contribute, to varying degrees, to
the state of internal equilibrium”.

Theorical framework

This article describes a collaborative research model for school-based mental health services
that targets children who are recent immigrants with violence-related mental health
symptoms. The model describes a conceptual framework used in the establishment of an
academic-community partnership during the development, evaluation, and implementation of
the Mental Health for Immigrants Program (MHIP), a school-based mental health intervention.
The article discusses the challenges that occurred and provides specific examples of how a
participatory research partnership may work together through all program phases—design
through implementation and program evaluation—to meet a specific community’s needs and
produce generalizable knowledge. The challenges and limitations of collaborative research
approaches also are discussed, with particular emphasis on the role of participatory research
in the development and evaluation of school-based mental health programs. The goal of the
theory of planned behavior ( TPB) to provide a comprehensive framework for understanding
the determinants of such behavior.

 The input frame includes the profile of respondents in terms of Gender, Grade Level and
Age
 The process frame will assess the profile of respondents in terms of survey or gathering
data through questionnaires to give for them to answer and also analyzing the data we
get to the respondents.
 The output frame determined the academic pressure in mental health of senior high
school students in Cabbo National High School.
Statement of the problem
Generally, this study aims to assess the preference of Students in Cabbo National HighSchool,
the study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of the following:


a. Sex
b. Year Level
c. Age
2.What is the impact of academic pressure of students respondents in terms of:
a.Pressure to perform
b.Workload
c. Academic self-perception
d.Time Management

Hypothesis
The null hypothesis which will be pursued in the study is:
1.There is a significant relationship between academic pressure and mental health among
high school students.
2.Students from government and private Schools differ significantly in their academic stress
3.Students from government and private schools significantly differ in their mental health
Research Method present study adopted survey method. e following tools
SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
This study focuses on the impact of academic pressure in mental health of Senior High School
Students in Cabbo National High School. The data collection will be conducted to 20%
randomly selected students in Senior High of Cabbo National HighSchool S/Y 2022-2023 who
will represent the population.

This study will not cover other problems that are not consider as one of the stressors and
depressants. Each of the respondents is given the same questionnaires to answer. The results
of this study will be applicable only to the respondents of this studying will not be used as a
measure to the effects of depression to the academic performance of the students who do not
belong to the population of this study. The main source of data will be the questionnaire

Significants of the study

Students- study highlights the importance of managing academic pressure and seeking
support when needed. By understanding the negative impact of academic pressure on mental
health, students can take steps to reduce their stress levels and maintain a healthy balance
between academic achievement and personal well-being.

Teachers- the study emphasizes the need to create a supportive and inclusive learning
environment that promotes student well-being. Teachers can help reduce academic pressure
by providing students with clear expectations and feedback, encouraging open
communication, and promoting a growth mindset.

Parents-the study underscores the importance of monitoring their child’s mental health and
supporting them in managing academic pressure. Parents can help their child by maintaining
open communication, setting realistic expectations, and encouraging a balance between
academic achievement and extracurricular activities.
Future researchers- the study suggests several areas for further investigation. For example,
researchers could explore the impact of academic pressure on mental health across different
cultures and demographics, investigate the role of social media in perpetuating academic
pressure, or examine the effectiveness of interventions aimed at reducing academic pressure
and promoting mental health.

resulting in stress and anxiety.
2.Mental health: The emotional, psychological, and social well-being of an individual, affecting
their thoughts, feelings, and actions.
3.Senior high school students: Students in their final two years of high school, typically ages
15-18.
