Heron’s Formula

Objective: Use properties of area to solve problems.

Evidence: Students will ascertain at least 80% proficiency on area review problems.
Essential Questions: What is area and why is it important to understand in the real world?

Agenda:
1. Warm-up/Challenge
2. Review
3. Heron’s Formula
4. Closing – answer essential questions

Review:

Find the area of the shaded region (1 - 2).

1.

2.

3. Find the area of the figure below

4. Find the diameter of a circle with a circumference of 52.7 mm. Round your answer to the nearest tenth.

5. PLANTS The world’s largest flower, the Giant Rafflesia, is 91 centimeters in diameter. Use a calculator to
find the circumference of a Giant Rafflesia to the nearest tenth.
Heron’s Formula to find the Area of a Triangle

Reminder: If you know the base and height of a triangle: Area =

New for us: If you know the 3 side lengths of a triangle,

you can use Heron’s formula to find the area.

The area, A, of a triangle with sides measuring a, b, and c is:

a b c
A= s (s  a )(s  b )(s  c ) , where s =
2

Example 1: Use Heron’s formula to find the area of the triangle.

9m 5m
9  5  12
First, we need to find s: s = = 13
2
12m
Now, we can plug in to Heron’s Formula to find the Area:

A= 13(13  5)(13  9)(13  12)

=20.4m2
Try on Your Own:

1. You try! Find the area of a triangle with sides a = 9in b = 11in, and c = 13in.
2. You try! A farmer has a triangular field with sides of 200 feet, 350 feet, and 400 feet. He wants to apply
fertilizer to the field. If one 35-pound bag of fertilizer covers 5,000 square feet, how many bags must he
buy to cover the field?
3. A triangular plot of land has sides that measure 5 meters, 7 meters, and 10 meters. What is the area of
this plot of land?
4. Find the area of a triangle whose sides are 12cm, 14cm and 16cm.
5. Find the area of a triangle, two sides of which are 13cm and 14cm and the perimeter is 42cm.
6. An isosceles triangle has perimeter 50cm and each of the equal sides is 15cm. Find the area of the
triangle.
