The IELTS Speaking Test assesses a person’s ability to communicate
effectively and naturally in spoken English.
The test is 11 - 14 minutes long and consists of three parts:
• Part 1: The Interview - 4-5 minutes
• Part 2: The Long Turn - 3-4 minutes
• Part 3: The Discussion - 4-5 minutes

Part One - The Interview


The Interview has questions on a variety of topics based on topics that
should be very familiar to the test taker.
• There are about 16 questions in all, though fewer may be asked if
time runs out.
• Your answers should be up to about three sentences long in most
cases.
• You may be asked to provide further information if the examiner
wants you to extend your answer.
• If you don't understand a question, you may ask the examiner to
repeat it word for word.

Part Two - The Long Turn


For this part, the test taker is given a prompt and must speak about the
topic for two minutes.
• Exactly one minute given to you for preparation before you speak,
and paper and a pencil will be supplied.
• You should always try to speak for two minutes, and no penalty
will be incurred if the examiner stops you.
• You may ask questions about the meaning of words during the
preparation time, but the examiner will not explain the question
to you or change your topic.

Part Three - The Discussion


The Discussion is a set of questions based on the Long Turn topic, and
require more in depth, abstract answers.
• Try to keep your answers at around four to six sentences.
• The examiner is listening for a range of different vocabulary and a
variety of different grammar structures.
• The examiner may ask questions based on your answers.
• If you don't understand a question, you may ask the examiner to
rephrase it.

VOCABULARY

This section has vocabulary to help you build your Lexical Resource.
There are single words, phrasal verbs, natural phrases and idiomatic
phrases all taken from the sample answers at the back of this paper. To
attain a high score, you should use a mix of different vocabulary so the
examiner can see that you can use it flexibly.

Pronunciation
The words in this section are words that some Korean English speakers
may have trouble pronouncing properly. Your teacher can help you with
your pronunciation if you feel you have any issues.
You should actively practise your pronunciation by recording your voice
and listening back to yourself, then correcting any errors and repeating
the process. Remember that pronunciation is 25% of your IELTS test.

Questions

This section contains a range of questions from all three parts of the
test. Each question has some space where you can write ideas for an
answer or a full answer.

• We suggest you ask and answer these questions with a fellow


student or friend and then discuss your answers.
• Help each other out with grammar, pronunciation and content to
improve faster.
• If you have no one to practise with, you should record your
answers, listen back to them, write them down, correct them and
then repeat the process. This is a very effective way to practise.

Sample Answers

Part 1

Now let’s talk about hobbies.


- Do you have a hobby?

I really love cooking, so I always try to cook new things in my free time.

- What equipment do you need for it?

It kind of depends on what I’m making, but usually a frying pan, and
knives for chopping things, plus all the ingredients.

- Did you have a hobby as a child?

I used to be really interested in butterflies, so I used to try to catch them


all the time, and I could recognise a lot of species. I’m not really that into
them anymore though.

- Why do you think that people have hobbies?

I think it’s because it’s something to do outside of work or studying that


is interesting and can help them relax. If people only ever worked or
studied, I think they’d go crazy.

Part 2

Talk about the biggest traffic jam that you have experienced. Please
say:
- Where and when was it
- What you did during this time
- How you felt about it
and why you remember it.

I don’t drive, actually, so I don’t often experience traffic, though I guess


you could say that rush hour on the Subway isn’t that different, but I
remember when I was younger I went on a family holiday to the USA,
and we rented a car and drove along the West Coast, and on the way
into San Francisco we got stuck in a huge jam. I had no idea what was
happening at the time, and my parents were really cagey about it – my
younger sister was only about nine so I guess they didn’t want to have to
discuss it with her – but it turns out there’d been a five-car pileup, and I
think in the end we were stuck there for close to six hours, inching along
a congested highway at a snail’s pace. It was the middle of the day, in
the height of summer, and the car was like an oven; we were actually
moving slowly enough for us to wander along next to the car whilst dad
drove it, and a lot of other families were doing the same, so it wasn’t
weird or anything. Looking back, I feel pretty sorry for my parents
getting stuck with three bored children on a boiling highway, with
hundreds of other cars all filled with equally bored and frustrated
people. I can’t imagine anything worse. Anyway, by the time we started
moving again my siblings and I had made friends with some American
kids from the car next to ours and had had a blast playing with them. We
eventually made it to San Francisco and though my poor parents were
completely wiped out, we’d had a great time.

Part 3

- What’s the traffic like in major cities in your country?


I think it’s pretty bad. I don’t drive often so I don’t usually experience it,
but when I take the bus, it can take a really long time to get anywhere in
some areas. Around rush hour the traffic is really heavy, and it can get
pretty gridlocked. I try to avoid travelling too much at those times, or I
take the subway instead.

- What are the main reasons for heavy traffic?


Well, rush hour is probably the biggest reason. Everybody’s trying to get
home at once, so the roads are suddenly really crowded. I think it’s also
because people drive cars when they could go by public transport
instead - a lot of people prefer it because going by bus or subway isn’t
always the most pleasant experience.

- What difficulties does the government face when addressing traffic


problems?
Well, it’s hard to make the roads any bigger than they already are, so
there’s only so many cars that can actually fit on them. Also, if there’re
accidents it can make things a lot worse, and if the emergency services
can’t arrive quickly then a lot of traffic can build up. I think money is also
a problem, because the government has lots of things to spend money
on, so maybe road construction isn’t as important as other things.
