GREEN BUILDING
INTRODUCTION
● Green Building is a concept of constructing high-performance structures that has no negative impacts on
the environment throughout the project’s life-cycle including planning, designing, construction,
performance, maintenance, restoration, and bulldozing.
● It is also known as green construction or sustainable building.
● A green building is basically constructed using a maximum of recycled waste material with other
construction materials to make the building energy-efficient from geothermal heating to appliance usage.

IMPORTANCE OF ENERGY EFFICIENT BUILDINGS
A. Environmental Benefits:
● Protect and enhance the biodiversity and ecological system.
● Reduces the wastage of water and energy.
● Improves air and water quality and promotes a healthy lifestyle.
● Preserve and maintain the existing environment.
● Promote a psychologically-optimised environment.
B. Economic Benefits:
● Lower construction cost and higher property value.
● Improves occupants’ health and overall productivity.
● Saves utility and other household bills by efficient use of water and energy.
● Best for growing and marketing green products.
C. Social Benefits:
● Easy and affordable go-green opportunities for existing homes.
● Enhance indoor air quality.
● Minimise strain on local infrastructure.
LOCATION
● The Jaquar Headquarters located at Manesar, Haryana is not only a beautiful building but a meticulously
designed facility featuring cutting-edge technology solutions resulting in a net zero campus with a certified
LEED Platinum (USGBC) rating. This project is reputed for being a visual treat with challenging organic
design and space planning.
● Jaquar group has global headquarters spread across 48,000 sq. metres in Manesar, Haryana, India and
presently operates in over 55 countries in Europe, Middle East, South East Asia, Africa and SAARC.
BUILDING FEATURES
A. ORIENTATION
a) DESIGN INTENT:
● On the planer level the corporate office on top has three wings projecting in 3 directions.
● The corporate office is at the top and the factory below it.
● The landscape was bermed and that raised the drop off point by 8m, providing space for an elaborate,
planned landscape with water features.
● This project is not only a visual treat with challenging organic designs and space planning but also
carefully interpreting space functionally.
BUILDING DESIGN
B. SUSTAINABLE SITE
a) Water Efficiency:
● There are two sources of water in the facility – potable water supplied by the municipality and treated
sewage water.
● After the tertiary treatment, treated effluent is used for flushing, landscaped irrigation, and HVAC.
● At least 50% of the water is treated and recycled on the site.
● In the washroom, all fixtures have dual valves. The flow rates of the water fixtures range from
0.71 gpf to 0.80 gpf. This results in about 46% reduction in the use of water.
Atmosphere
The spatial planning analysis and output gives a form which has better ventilation and air flow, better
indoor air quality, reduction in energy consumption and also gives an output of an energy efficient design
and form which does not just accommodate the function but is also aesthetic.
c) MATERIAL AND RESOURCES
1. Zinc panels
2. Optimum E-value semi-unitised glazing
3. Autoclaved aerated blocks
4. Louvers
5. Daylighting
6. Effective shading
7. Passive cooling
8. Radiant cooling
9. Solar energy
● Integrated sustainable landscape: The greywater from the factory and office is treated within the site
and is reused for the maintenance of this integrated well designed and hence is sustainable.
● UV Coated glass, Zinc Facade, Louvers: These elements constituting the facade of the building
contributes to the heat gain reduction inside the building and effectively brings down the cooling load and
energy consumption on a large scale.
● Radiant Cooling: System which uses chilled water circulated in the floor slabs to condition the spaces
much more effectively compared to traditional air conditioning which is 15° against 6°.
● Day-light effective shading and passive cooling: The offsets in the floor plates provide effective
shading for the lower floors inducing indirect control through the louvres. Water body humidifies and
reduces the temperature of the air.
● Solar Energy: The roof of the warehouse and parking shelters are covered with solar PV systems
generating 975kW of energy which is utilised for the power requirements of the building.
● Cooling system: All areas are served by a central air conditioning plant. The HVAC system comprises a
conventional cooling system, radiant cooling, heat pump, VRF indoor/outdoor, and ventilation mechanism.
● Heat Pump System: It is integrated with the equipment of radiant and conventional cooling systems and
has the capability to serve both these systems. Depending upon the heat load and thermal comfort
requirement, the facility can operate the heat pump.
● Ventilation System: As an energy efficient measure, the facility has commissioned heat recovery units
to utilise the cool return air to lower the temperature of outdoor air. These units are installed on the
terrace level. Exhaust fans are commissioned in the facility. For maintaining required pressure in lifts and
staircases, axial fans are installed.
● Lighting Design: All installed lighting are LEDs. In all the regularly occupied spaces there is provision
for automatic lighting shut-off that results in power saving. General lighting in each space is controlled
separately. Occupancy sensors too shut off lights when offices and meeting rooms are unoccupied.
BENEFITS
1. ENERGY AND ATMOSPHERE:
● 35% reduction in lighting power density
● 90% Energy Star Qualified Equipment
2. MATERIALS AND RESOURCES:
● 75% diversion of construction and demolition debris
3. INDOOR ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY:
● 90% of occupied space has quality views
4. WATER EFFICIENCY:
● 40% reduction in indoor potable water
CONCLUSION
● It is an iconic structure that represents the brand value of Jaquar.
● It is not only in the form and the architecture- the organic design, the space planning, the
visual form inspired by nature) but also in the functionality (factory space and office space)
and technicality (net zero building), that this project is remarkable.
● It creates a sense of awe as one goes through the lush landscape, water bodies etc. to
approach the building.
● It is a corporate space which is intimate in feeling, iconic in its presence, illuminated on the
inside, with art interventions.
● The most memorable aspect of the project is not only the structure but the space it
encapsulates.
