Tutorial 3
Course Instructor: Dr. Muslim Malik

1. Let v1 = (2, 5) and v2 = (1, 3). Show that {v1 , v2 } is a spanning set for R2 .

2. Suppose that a set of vectors S1 = {v1 , v2 , v3 } is a spanning set of a subspace V in R5 . If v4 is an another

vector in V, then is the set S2 = {v1 , v2 , v3 , v4 } still a spanning set for V? If so, prove it.

3. If v1 = t + 2 and v2 = t2 + 1 and S = {v1 , v2 } then, does S span P2 ?

4. Find 3
  a basisfor 
the subspace
 of R spanned
  by the vectors
1 −1 1 2
2, −2,  0 , 0.
2 −7 −3 6
5. Let V be the vector space of all 2 × 2 matrices whose entries are real numbers. Let

a b
W = A ∈ V |A = : a, b, c ∈ R .
c −a

(a) Show that W is a subspace of V.

(b) Find a basis of W.

(c) Find the dimension of W.

6. Let V be the vector space of all 2 × 2 matrices over R. Consider the subspaces

a −a
W1 = : a, c, d ∈ R ,
c d

a −b
W2 = : a, b, d ∈ R ,
−a d

if m = dim (W1 ∩ W2 ) and n = dim (W1 + W2 ), then find the value of m and n.

7. Let V = (x, y, z) ∈ R |x + 3y + z = 0 . Verify that V is a subspace and find a basis for V .

8. Let P4 be the vector space consisting of all polynomials of degree 4 or less with real number coefficients.
Let W be the subspace of P4 by W = {p(x) ∈ P4 |p(1) + p(−1) = 0 and p(2) + p(−2) = 0}.
Find a basis of the subspace W and determine the dimension of W.

9. Let P2 be the vector space of all polynomials of degree two or less. Consider the subset in P2

Q = {p1 (x), p2 (x), p3 (x), p4 (x)}

where,
p1 (x) = x2 + 2x + 1, p2 (x) = 2x2 + 3x + 1, p3 (x) = 2x2 , p4 (x) = 2x2 + x + 1.

(a) Use the basis B = {1, x, x2 } of P2 , give the coordinate vectors of the vectors in Q.
(b) Find a basis of the span Span(Q) consisting of vectors in Q.
(c) For each vector in Q which is not a basis vector you obtained in (b), express the vector as a linear
combination of basis vectors.

10. Let V be the vector space over R of all real 2×2 matrices. Let W be the subset of V consisting of all
symmetric matrices.

Let W1 and W2 be subspaces of the vector space Rn . If B1 and B2 are bases for W1 and W2 , respectively,
then B1 ∩ B2 is a basis of the subspace W1 ∩ W2 .

12. Find a basis for the solution space of the homogeneous linear system, and find the dimension of that
space

x − 3y + z = 0
2x − 6y + 2z = 0
3x − 9y + 3z = 0.

13. Let P3 be the vector space over R of all degree three or less polynomial with real number coefficient. Let
W be the following subset of P3 .
