Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Work immersion program was recently introduced by DepEd to simulate a work

like environment for senior high school students particularly in the grade 12 level as a

way to prepare the students in their upcoming job opportunities. Work immersion

programs have emerged as an aspect of education offering students the valuable

opportunity to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge learned in classrooms and

real-world employment. Work immersion enables the students to acquire and develop

the skills of teamwork, communication, attendance and punctuality, productivity and

resilience, initiative and proactivity, judgment and decision-making, dependability and

reliability, attitude, and professionalism. (R.A Calibo June 8,2023). The research being

conducted dwells into exploring the relationship between work immersion program and

employability rates among senior high school graduates from Camp Vicente Lim

Integrated School (CVLIS).

The world of work is ever changing, along with it are the rigorous requirements

that are needed to be accepted. As Senior High School graduates embark on their

journey, it becomes crucial that proper evaluation of how work immersion program

influence their employability.

Whilst conducting this research our goal is to analyze and determine the

interplay between work immersion programs and employability rates, among Senior

High School graduates. Upon doing so we seek to provide insights that not only

We lead, we serve, we excel with a heart. 1

contribute to existing knowledge but also directly impact educational strategies and

policies at CVLIS.

Background of the Study

Through the constant changes occurring on the work field one of the key

challenges, for Senior High School graduates is bridging the gap between what they

learn in classrooms and what is expected in real world workplaces. Work immersion

emerged as a solution to address this problem by providing students with practical

experience. This study will focus on how these programs influence the employability of

graduates.

Due to the changes, to ensure that Senior High School graduates thrive in this

environment it is essential to understand the impact of work immersion programs on

their employability. Employability encompasses skills, competencies and preparedness

for careers. The primary objective of this research is to uncover the correlation between

work immersion experiences and employability among Senior High School graduates at

CVLIS.

Moreover a recent research conducted by Garcia and Yazon (2020) investigated

the performance, compatibility, with work immersion initiatives and job prospects of

graduates from Senior High School in the Division of Calamba City. Their findings

showcased that Senior High School graduates fulfilled the job criteria set by partner

institutions involved in Work Immersion. The study revealed alignment in areas such as

personal skills, technical competencies and practical application of knowledge. This

research conducted by Garcia and Yazon sheds light on the context. Reinforces the

significance of our inquiry into the relationship between work immersion programs and

employability, at CVLIS.

Theoretical Framework

The study is anchored on the theory of Experiential Education Theory which

states that all programs that are designed to expand the setting of learning

experiences beyond the traditional school environment to occupational and

community settings and these programs use planned experiences to promote

cooperation between traditional educational institutions and business, industry,

labor, government and community groups to support learning. The theory is also

defined as “the process whereby knowledge is created through the transformation of

experience. Knowledge results from the combinations of grasping and transforming

the experience.” (Kolb, 1984). This theory will be the guide in determining the

characteristics of work immersion as it is implemented on the graduates, as the

theory stated that all programs are designed to expand the setting of learning

experiences beyond the traditional school environment to occupational and

community settings.

The paradigm in figure 1 presents the framework and how the flow of the

study take place. The first box shows the input of the research study which refers to

the characteristics of a work immersion program and the factors that influence the

employability rate. The second box pertains to the process as to what procedures

will be done throughout the research. The third box indicates the output of the

research study, determining the relationship between the two variables.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Related Literature

According to Calibo (2023), work immersion facilitates the acquisition and

development of various skills essential for students, including teamwork,
communication, attendance and punctuality, productivity and resilience, initiative and
proactivity, judgment and decision-making, dependability and reliability, as well as
attitude and professionalism.

The in-house work immersion program, as outlined by St. Francis of Assisi

College (2023), serves as a means for Senior High School learners to acquaint
themselves with professional environments, simulate employment scenarios, and apply
specialized competencies within actual work settings. This immersive experience aims
to prepare learners for various curriculum exits.

The Senior High School (SHS) program, a pivotal component of the K-12
education reform in the Philippines, addresses the issue of youth unemployment by
offering a work immersion program. According to The Asia Foundation (2018), this
initiative aims to provide students with real workplace experiences, equipping them with
technical-vocational and livelihood skills. Such exposure enables students to make
more informed career choices and enhances their prospects for employment, mitigating
the sector's lack of knowledge, skills, and work experience that hinder meaningful
economic development.

(DOST-FPRDI, 2018) The work immersion aims to equip students with real-life
job experience and prepare them for their chosen career after graduation.

The Asia Foundation (2018) highlighted the significance of the 80-hour Work
Immersion embedded within the K-12 Curriculum, serving as a pivotal training ground
for Senior High School students. This program offers a preparatory platform for
students navigating various post-graduation paths, whether pursuing higher education,
entering the workforce, or venturing into entrepreneurship. Its primary objective lies in
exposing students to authentic work environments, fostering competencies across
diverse learning domains. Moreover, the immersion experience plays a crucial role in

willingness of graduates to participate.

Respondents of the Study

The respondents will consist of Senior High School graduates who have

undergone the Work Immersion Program at CVLIS. Their participation will be

voluntary, ensuring their willingness and consent to take part in the study.

Research Instrument

A structured questionnaire will serve as the primary research instrument. The

questionnaire will be designed to gather qualitative and quantitative data regarding

graduates’ perceptions of how the Work Immersion Program influenced their

employability. It will include open-ended questions and Likert-scale items, focusing

on various aspects such as skill development, practical application, and perceived

impact on employability.

Construction and Validation of the Instrument

The questionnaire will be developed based on insights derived from relevant

literature and pilot-tested among a small group of Senior High School graduates to

assess its clarity, relevance, and comprehensibility. Adjustments will be made based

on feedback received during the pilot phase to ensure the questionnaire’s validity

and reliability.

Data Collection Procedure

Data collection will involve distributing the validated questionnaire to Senior High

School graduates who participated in the Work Immersion Program at CVLIS. The

distribution method may include online surveys, face-to-face interviews, or other

approaches that accommodate respondents’ accessibility and preferences.

Data Analysis

Qualitative data collected through close-ended questions will undergo thematic

analysis to identify recurring patterns and themes. Quantitative data gathered from

Likert-scale items will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies,

percentages, mean scores, and standard deviations to provide a comprehensive

overview of graduates’ perceptions regarding Work Immersion Program outcomes
