Microteaching Reflection

David Culloty reflected on his microteaching lesson on using sliding set squares to draw inclined lines. He identified his strengths as being confident, reinforcing skills and COVID rules, and being well organized and prepared. His weaknesses were a lack of higher-order questioning, not including color on the worksheet, and not using active learning strategies. To improve, he will mix lower and higher-order questions, incorporate more teaching aids, and maintain positive body language, dress professionally, and use humor.

SP2 MICROTEACHING (CA 2- Part 1) REFLECTION

Outline your key learnings from your reflection on microteaching. Use concise bullet points and the
headings below. Please be aware that this reflection will be peer-assessed in class.

STRENGTHS [minimum of 3]

1) Confident and happy.

• I came into the room confident and gave a very good first impression.
• I was ready to go from the start. I was very nervous, but I really did enjoy the 7 minutes of
teaching.
• I had very confident voice control, even though it was difficult to speak through the mask. I had
a smile under the mask, and this suggested to the students that I was enjoying the lesson.
• My body landgage was positive and I kept busy during the class.

2) Reinforced skills/covid rules.

• I kept reinforcing the skill and technique of using sliding set squares to draw inclined lines.
• I also made sure the students kept to the social distance guidelines when they were collecting
the worksheet, each student came up to the desk one by one to collect sheet.
• During the lesson I calmly and quietly walked around the room and observed the students
completing the worksheet.
• I corrected one student when the correct technique was not used.

3) Well organised/prepared.
• I had all my resources (large demonstration set squares, white board pointer, worksheet,
coloured whiteboard markers) ready and positioned to give a very traditional lesson presented
on the whiteboard and visualizer.
• I knew my topic very well, when I was questioned by a student on another technique for using
the two set squares differently, I was well able to answer his question correctly.
• My lesson was very clear in my head and I positioned my resources around the teacher table so
they were easy to pick up as I did my lesson.
• Using the large set squares was a very effective way of demonstrating the skill of sliding one set
over the other. I held them in my hand for the lesson in case I would be asked to demonstrate
the skill again.

WEAKNESSES [minimum of 3]

1) Questioning.
• I should have included more compare and contrast questions at the end of lesson.
• I should have included higher order questions to provoke and challenge the students.

2) Colour on worksheet.
• My worksheet was very good, but I should have included some colour (red/blue) on the
worksheet to make it more attractive to the students.
• I should have avoided handwriting on the worksheet.

3) Active learning
• Active learning strategies missed. I should have engaged students with more discussion
throughout the lesson, I was showing too much.

SUGGESTIONS FOR FUTURE TEACHING [minimum of 3]

1) Mix/spread Questions.
• The lower order questions are fine, they will encourage students to recall or remember basic
information, however I will include a lot more higher order questions in my lessons. The higher
order questions will provoke discussion and they will challenge the students more.
• I will try to spread my questions out more to individual students and the whole class to help
focus attention and get better student answers.

2) More Teaching aids in classroom.

• Going forward I will still use worksheets, but I will introduce more teaching aids for example
models, videos, handheld technology, computers and more work through the visualizers.
• The last two Fridays on school placement I have seen teachers use teams and one note and it
was very impressive. I will also make sure all my classes’ use teams and one note to complete
class assignments.
3) Body laungauge/dress/humour.
• I will maintain positive body language during my classes, by my movements and gestures I show
that I am interested, approachable, and open to all students.
• Going forward I should dress more professionally in slacks and dress shoes.
• Positive use of humour by the teacher and use of humour by the students can help with
discipline.
