Subject and Predicate


What is a Subject and Predicate?
Every complete sentence consists of
two parts –
Subject and Predicate

A complete sentence always contains a verb,


expresses a complete idea and makes sense
standing alone.
SUBJECT
Subject –The subject of the sentence
is what or whom the
sentence is about
For example –
The dog is sleeping under the sun.
The word ‘Dog’ is the subject of the
sentence.
PREDICATE
Predicate – The predicate is the part
of the sentence which tells what
the subject is doing or what the
subject is.
For Example –
The dog is sleeping under the sun.
The clause ‘is sleeping under the sun’ is the predicate.
The predicate includes the verb.
Examples
Lets understand it better with help of examples:
1. Radha reads.
Subject – Radha ; Predicates – reads.

2. Radha reads a book.


Subject – Radha ; Predicates – reads a book.

3. Radha reads a book at home everyday.


Subject – Radha ; Predicates – reads a book at home everyday.
More Examples

4. Ram’s sister is playing.


Subject – Ram’s sister ; Predicate – is playing

5. The big house is on the mountain.


Subject – The big house ; Predicate – is on the mountain.

6. Rakesh gave a pen to Neeta.


Subject – Rakesh; Predicate – gave a pen to Neeta.
Examples again
7. Hema and Uma went to play on the ground.
Subject – Hema and Uma; Predicate – went to play on the ground.

8. Me and my dog went for a run on the beach.


Subject – Me and my dog; Predicate – went for a run on the beach.

8. Radha ate the cookies and drank the milk.


Subject – Radha; Predicate – ate the cookies and drank the milk.
8. Sit Down
Subject – You ; Predicate – sit down
Exercise - 1

Find the subject and the predicate in the sentence:

1. Meena took a pencil box.

2. Bela pushed the door open.

3. Ajay gave the book to Kiran.

4. Leela went home from school.

5. Jeevan ran out to play in the rain.

Find the subject and the predicate in the sentence:
1. Kareem ate an apple and a cake from his lunch box.

2. Suzan and Geeta are best friends.


3. Smita’s cat ran out of the house..

4. Rakesh folded the paper and put it in his bag.

5. My sister is a the best dancer.

6. Motu and Patlu have a lot of fun together.

7. Do your Homework.
