I. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT
Hello dear learners! Welcome to this activity on Empowerment Technology. One of the
important reasons in using computers per se is its ability to do recurring tasks automatically. But this
ability has to be honed by learning the characteristics and features of the software you use with your
computers. After all, no matter how good or advanced your computers and software may be, it can only
be as good as the person using it.

In this activity, we will be learning basic Image Manipulation. Image Manipulation which refers
to a process of bringing changes to a digitized image and transforming it to a desired image. The
changes are made possible by resorting to image processing. Image manipulation is utilized to create
magazine covers and albums from photographs. A single photograph may be modified to suit the
requirement, or several photographs can be combined to form a collage. Currently, there are numerous
software applications ranging from professional applications to basic imaging software

III. ACTIVITIES

Image manipulation is the art of transforming an image to convey what you want, rather
than what the original image may have shown. This can be done for artistic reasons, but because of
the power of the photograph to show true depictions of reality (and the high regard that people can
hold for a picture as evidence), this can also be done for reasons of deceit. The process is
sometimes known as airbrushing after the tools are used to achieve the result, or photoshopping,
using Adobe Photoshop which is the most common image editing tool used in the digital age. (Image

Principles and Basic Techniques of Image Manipulation
As for changing the contents of an image; as long as the artist does not try to misrepresent what
they are doing and methods are completely explained in the caption, it is within their judgement
whether it is a success or not.

appear different in size, texture, shape or
color to attract the viewer’s attention.

Combining Text, Graphics and Images:

 Transparent shapes- Add simple with a slight transparency behind your text to clearly see the
text you want to emphasizes.
 Fonts and shapes- fonts and shapes should complement each other. You can use rounded
shapes with rounded fonts and sharp shapes with sharp fonts.
 Text and background-text and background should be aligned to have an organized look. You
can align text shapes or geometric figures in the image.
 Clean and clear background – use a clean and clear background for the message to be
readable. Background should not washout your message.

 Directions: Take a photo in a landscape and a portrait format be it of yourself, a family
member, a friend or a pet. Create a photo collage where both pictures are edited showcasing the
before and after image. Print your work in a short-sized photo paper. Check the rubric for grading. The
following things shall be done on the picture:
1. Cropping
2. Adjusting brightness and contrast
3. Color balancing
4. Combining text with images preferably positive quotes. (Don’t forget to cite the original
writer.)
