POWERQUALITY DITURBANCES

Power Quality Disturbances in Electrical Engineering

I. Introduction

Power quality disturbances play a crucial role in the field of electrical engineering, as

they can cause significant disruption and damage to electrical systems. Understanding and

addressing these disturbances is of utmost importance to ensure the reliable operation of power

grids and the smooth functioning of various electrical devices. This chapter aims to provide an

overview of power quality disturbances, their causes, impacts, and mitigation techniques.

II. Literature Review

In order to gain a comprehensive understanding of power quality disturbances, it is

essential to review existing literature on this topic. According to Martinez et al. (2022), one key

standard for evaluating power quality disturbances is EN50160. This standard provides

guidelines for monitoring and assessing parameters such as voltage fluctuations, harmonics,

flicker, and interruptions in electrical systems.

Several studies have focused on different aspects related to power quality disturbances as

per EN50160. For instance, Caicedo et al. (2023) conducted a systematic review on real-time

detection and classification methods for identifying various types of power quality disturbances.

Their findings highlight the importance of accurate detection techniques in effectively managing

these disruptions.

Another area that has been extensively researched is the characterization and analysis of

power quality disturbances using signal processing techniques. Oubrahim et al. (2023) reviewed

various signal processing and pattern recognition methods employed for characterizing different

types of disturbances.

III. Voltage Sags/Swells

Voltage sags are temporary reductions in voltage levels below normal values, whereas

voltage swells refer to temporary increases above normal values. These events can be caused by

various factors such as faults in the system or sudden changes in load demand.

The impact of voltage sags/swells can range from equipment malfunctioning or damage

to complete shutdowns resulting in financial losses or safety hazards. Mitigation techniques

include employing backup power systems such as uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) or

regulating devices like automatic voltage regulators (AVRs) to stabilize the voltage levels.

IV. Voltage Interruptions

Voltage interruptions occur when the supply of electrical power is completely cut off for

a short or extended period of time. Common causes include faults in transmission lines,

equipment failures, or planned maintenance activities.

Voltage interruptions can lead to disruptions in industrial processes, loss of data in

computer systems, and inconvenience for residential users. Prevention methods include

implementing redundant power supply systems and employing protective devices like surge

arresters and circuit breakers.

V. Harmonics

Harmonics are distortions in the ideal sinusoidal waveform of an alternating current

signal. These distortions are caused by non-linear loads such as electronic devices and power

converters.

The presence of harmonics can result in overheating of equipment, reduced energy

efficiency, and interference with communication systems. Mitigation strategies include using

harmonic filters, properly designing electrical systems to minimize harmonic generation, and

adopting power electronic devices with low harmonic content.

VI. Flicker

Flicker refers to rapid variations in voltage amplitude that can cause visible light

flickering or fluctuation in the brightness level of lamps. It is typically caused by load changes or

fluctuations within a power system.

Flicker can negatively impact sensitive equipment such as medical instruments or disturb

visual tasks performed by individuals. To mitigate flicker, techniques such as active power filters

or adjusting load distribution can be employed.

VII. Transients/Impulses
4

Transients/impulses are sudden changes in voltage or current waveforms that occur for

very short durations due to lightning strikes, switching operations, or faults within the system.

These disturbances can damage sensitive electronics and disrupt communication

networks if not adequately protected against them using surge protection devices like lightning

arresters and transient voltage suppressors (TVS).

VIII.Unbalance

Unbalance refers to inequality among phases in a three-phase electrical system

concerning parameters like voltages or currents.

Unbalanced conditions may arise from faults in the system, unequal loading, or improper

wiring connections.

Unbalance can result in increased heating of motors, reduced motor efficiency, and

voltage fluctuations. To address unbalance issues, it is essential to ensure proper load distribution

and balance among phases.

IX. Conclusion

In conclusion, power quality disturbances have a significant impact on the reliability and

performance of electrical systems. This chapter provided an overview of various types of

disturbances such as voltage sags/swells, interruptions, harmonics, flicker, transients/impulses,

and unbalance. Understanding their causes and effects is crucial for developing effective

mitigation strategies.
5

By following guidelines such as EN50160 and leveraging advancements in real-time

detection techniques (Caicedo et al., 2023), characterization methods (Oubrahim et al., 2023),

and mitigation technologies (Ravi & Sathish Kumar, 2022), electrical engineers can effectively

manage power quality disturbances to ensure the smooth operation of power grids and enhance

the reliability of electrical systems.

It is imperative that researchers continue to explore innovative solutions for detecting,

classifying, characterizing these disturbances while addressing emerging challenges posed by

evolving technologies and increasing penetration of renewable energy sources into power grids.

Overall , understanding how these disturbances affect different aspects of electrical

systems will enable engineers to design more robust solutions capable of mitigating their impacts

efficiently.
