Lab Report 02

This document is a lab report on water quality parameters prepared by Mariam Nazia for the class ENVL107.5. It introduces various physical, chemical, and biological factors that determine water quality, such as temperature, turbidity, pH, dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity, and total dissolved solids. It then provides more detailed descriptions of turbidity, pH, dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity, and total dissolved solids. The document concludes with a table showing the pH, dissolved oxygen, and temperature levels of various samples, including drinking water, soda, orange juice, antacid, and detergent.

Water Quality Parameter

Introduction
There are various properties of water such as physical, chemical or biological factors. Physical
parameters of water quality include temperature and turbidity. Chemical characteristics involve
pH and dissolved oxygen or DO. Besides all these, to measure quality of water is Electrical
Conductivity as well as TDS are two more parameters, which are used in making this lab report.

Turbidity
it means the cloudiness or haziness of a fluid. Caused by large number of individual particles.
Actually, these particles float on the liquid and makes it turbid, besides light also cannot pass
through the turbid water.

pH
it is one of the most common water quality tests indicating the samples acidity.
It is run on a scale ranging from “0 to 14” is called neutral in the scale. Where less than 7 means
acidic and more than 7 is basic indicator.

DO
It measures the amount of gaseous oxygen, which is dissolved in an aqueous solution. Oxygen
gets into water by diffusion from the surrounding air, by aeration, and as a waste product of
photosynthesis. Natural DO of water is 7. “DO” is different in the same water because of
temperature. In hot water “DO” decreases but as the water gets cooler, “DO” increases.

Electrical Conductivity
Electrical conductivity or EC estimates the amount of total dissolved salts, or the total amount
of dissolved ions in the water.

TDS
TDS or “Total Dissolved Solid” refers to any mineral’s salts, metals, cation or anions dissolved in
water mainly calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, bicarbonates, chlorides and sulfates and
in some small amount of organic matter that are dissolved in water.
PH DO Temperature
NSU drinking water 6.93 9.30 23.5
Coca cola 2.8 11.70 12.8
Orange juice 3.5 6.45 9.67
Antacid 9.0 2.98 2.54
Detergent 9.72 1.24 1.83
