TOPOGRAPHY OF THE DISTRICT

The District of Nadia is situated in the heart of the Bengal delta held within the arms of the Ganga,
namely, the Bhagirathi on the West and Mathabhanga on the North. The entire district lies in the alluvial
plain of the Ganga and its tributaries. Most districts in West Bengal take their name from the headquarters
station of the district, but Nadia district takes its name not from Krishnagar, the headquarter but from
Nadia or Nabadwip hallowed by the memory of Lord Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu who was born here on
18th February, 1486. The British district of Nadia was formed in 1787. The present district of Nadia after
partition was formed by Notification No.545-GA dated 23rd February, 1948

The district of Nadia is bounded on the north and north-west by the district of Murshidabad. On the south-
east and east it is bounded by the Republic of Bangladesh. In the south and south-east the district is
bounded by the district of North 24-Parganas.The shape of the district is irregular, lying North to South.
The district is about 46ft. above the mean sea-level and the tropic of cancer divides the district into two
parts.

For administrative convenience Nadia district is divided into four Subdivisions – Krishnagar Sadar,
Ranaghat. Kalyani and Tehatta. The district has an area of 3927 sq kms having a population of

the end of November to the end of February.

Krishnanagar is the most important town of this district, as it is the district headquarter of Nadia. It is on
the bank of river Jalangi. The palace of Nadiaraj (Rajbari) built here is a prominent place of tourist
attraction though the remnants of the past glory have been eroded and only a dilapidated structure of the
exquisite places with carving on its inner walls exists today. Krishnagar is famour for world-class clay
models & terracotta works. It can claim a proud tradition for the sweets- Sarpuria & Sarbhaja.

Kalyani is another important town of this district and sub divisional headquarter. It was identified (and
named) by Dr. B. C. Roy, Ex Chief Minister of West Bengal and act as an alternative to the city of
Kolkata, from which it is about 50 km away. Two Universities (Gen & Agri) are situated in this sub
division. Two Engineering Colleges and newly established Medical College have added a laurel to its
crown.

HOW TO USE SOIL RESOURCE MAPPING REPORT

This report embodies the results of the Soil Resources mapping of Nadia district, West Bengal providing
information on the geographical setting of the district, such as location, extent, physiography, relief, drainage,
climate, geology, natural vegetation, agriculture, land use and soils.
The report contains other information on Interpretative grouping of soils(Chapter 7) such as land
capability classes, land irrigability classes, soil suitability grouping and hydrological grouping and also
recommendation for crops; horticulture development; forest, forage and grassland development; water harvesting,
water storage and water management that are essential for soil and land resource management.
Nadia district of West Bengal is spread over an area of 392700 ha. The district is covered by twelve SOI
topographical sheets on the scale of 1: 50,000 which are used as base material along with satellite imageries.
Each soil mapping unit is marked by mapping unit i.e. ALb1a1 (Alluvium; alluvial plain; 0-3 % slope;
agriculture land use; Soil Series Association, describing Bangania as dominant series in association with Sonadanga
and Banagram series). Each soil association is restricted to a maximum of three soil series
For the use of the soil resource report, first locate the area of your interest on the map and note down the
soil mapping units. Permanent features such as road, stream, lakes and village habitation etc. shown on the map,
help to locate the area of interest on the map. For the detailed information on soil mapping unit in respect of
soil series of the area of interest, its extent, present and proposed land uses, reference may be made to Chapter 4,
appendix I and II.
Climate
Climate is defined as the average weather pattern of a particular place. It is primarily gauged by few
atmospheric parameters like temperature, rainfall pattern, wind speed and direction, humidity etc. Of
these, temperature and rainfall are most influential yardsticks and have a direct link with our society and
daily life. Changing rainfall pattern, increasing trend of extreme events and storms, sea level rise etc. are
few of those indicators by which we can perceive that climate is changing. And this change is too
important to understand for the welfare of our society towards sustainable development. Climate change
has a significant effect on local weather. So realization of local weather along with global climate and
its pattern is a must. Here we will discuss about the two most important climatic parameters such as
temperature and rainfall.
The monthly climatology of temperature of the entire district varies from 27d to 40d Celsius (data

RAINFALL PATTERN ANALYSIS

Nadia is a medium rainfall area in West Bengal according to rainfall zonation and receives generally
more than 1500 mm cumulative rainfall per year due to the geographical position. If we see the Nadia,
it is bordered by extensive mountainous range and acts as a shelter as well as barrier of cloud patches.
Monsoon cloud enters through southern side and travel towards north but most of the part cannot cross
beyond the barrier and huge rainfall occurs after being blocked by this mountain range.
RIVERS

List of rivers of Nadia district, located in West Bengal state of India. District has four important rivers

• Jalangi River
• Hooghly River
• Churni River
• Bidyadhari River
Some others rivers which are originated from Nadia district

• Mathabhanga River
• Bhairab River
• Ichamati River
Trans-boundary Rivers between the Nadia district and Bangladesh

• Padma River
• Mathabhanga River

The whole district is a network of moribund rivers and streams, but the Bhagirathi, the Jelani and the
Matabhanga are the three which have been for more than a century, and still are distinctively known as
the "Nadia Rivers." Until the advent of the railways, these watercourses afforded the regular means of
communication between the uppeg valley of the Ganges and the seaboard. Ever since the British
occupation of the country much difficulty has been experienced in keeping them open for navigation
throughout the year. They have, when left to themselves, a very sluggish current which fails to
carry off the large quantities of silt which they receive from the Ganges. In 1781 Major Rennel
Recorded that they were not usually navigable in the dry season. Captain Colebrook, in a memoir
on the course of the Ganges (1797), writes thus :-"The Bhagirathi and Jalangi are not
navigable throughout during the dry season. There have been instances of all these rivers
continuing open in their turn during the dry season. The Jalangi used formerly to be navigable
during the· whole or greater part of the year. The Bhagirathi was navigable in the dry season of
1796. The Matabhanga, when surveyed in 1795, was navigable throughout in the dry season for
boats of a moderate burden. This year (1797), however, I was informed that the passage was no longer
practicable for boats proceeding to. Calcutta. Experience. has shown that none of these rivers are to
be depended on." Early in the nineteenth century the Matabhanga appears to have been more easily
navigable than either the Jalangi or the Bhagirathi, and it is said to have continued open every year
from 1809 to 1818. In 1813 measures were taken towards improving its channel, and a toll was
established to defray the expense of the work. Very little good, however, appears to have resulted· from
the effort then made, for in 1818 "the obstructions had become so many and dangerous, as to cause
the wreck of innumerable boats, and to entail heavy losses on account of demurrage paid for detention
of ships waiting expected cargoes the merchants of Calcutta in that year urgently petitioned Government that
steps should be taken for remedying an evil from which the commercial interest suffered too severely.

'e-waste' means electrical and electronic equipment, whole or in part discarded as waste by the
consumer or bulk consumer as well as rejects from manufacturing, refurbishment and repair
processes.
Current practices in Nadia District were limited to collection and transportation of E- waste to other
cities. For recycling activities. Scrap vendors collected E- waste from Government. Offices, residential
areas, industries, private institutes, banks etc. Such E-waste was then stored at the scrap yards. When
considerable E- waste was collected at the scrap yards they were then packed and transported to the
recycling facilities at other cities.

3.0 Air Quality Management

a. Current Status related to Air Quality Management

Though much bigger roles are played by the intervention of General Manager, District Industries Centre
of the Directorate of MS & ME under the Department of MS & ME and Textiles, Government of West Bengal
and the West Bengal Pollution Control Board in maintaining the Air quality in the district with their efficacious
Quality Management Plan, the Motor Vehicle Section of the district may also be an effective player in this regard
which steadily keeps checks upon the quality of emission produced by vehicles through Auto Emission Testing
Centers all across the district.
As provided in the Central Motor Vehicle Act, 1989 (7th Amendment, 2001), every motor vehicle other
than motor cycles of engine capacity not exceeding 70 cc shall be maintained in such condition and shall be so
driven so as to comply with the standards prescribed in the rules with exception and modifications in respect of 2
wheelers and 3 wheelers operating on Liquefied Petroleum Gas Compressed Natural Gas. Under the Act under
reference, any vehicle can be operational on the roads of the country only if it has a valid Pollution Under Control
(PUC) certificate and to receive such a certificate the vehicle must pass the Emission Test. It is but obvious that
the emission standard set by the CMV Rules that all vehicles should conform to is aimed at maintaining proper
air quality for sustaining an amiable environment and ambience for all.
In this respect, the MV Section, Nadia does its all job with 45 (Forty Five) such existing Auto Emission
Testing Centers in the district. The control and supervision of all these centers are exercised by the section
through technical inspections, approval, renewal and granting of authorizations with the certification from the
West Bengal State Pollution Control Board. These testing centers are authorized to conduct the emission tests for
vehicles approaching them and issue certificate of Pollution Under Control to them if and only if these vehicles
pass the test. The test is done on payment of fee approved by the Government & the entire procedure followed in
online. The Motor Vehicle Inspectors of the district are in constant touch with these centers for any technical
issue, suggestions, coordination and dissemination of Government orders or directives received from the
Transport Department, Government of West Bengal. Errant vehicles or vehicles plying without a valid PUC are
prosecuted under the Motor Vehicle Act, 1989.
