EVOLUTION OF ICT
There are 4 main periods in history that divide the era of ICT, namely, the
 Premechanical Period - can be traced back thousands of years ago,
around 3000 BCE 1450 CE. During this time, human started
communicating with one another using words and pictograms curved
in rocks. Then they started to write symbols as substitutes for pictures to
depict ideas, objects, and animals. These gave rise to our modern-day
alphabet.

this time, the interest in automating and speeding up numerical
calculation grew. The machines driven by mechanical means such
as steam and gears dominated information processing and
calculation.

 Electromechanical Period - This period started

around 1840-1940. In this period, the use of
electricity for information handling and
transfer bloomed. The need and the urgency
to share information with one another in a
faster yet reliable manner over long distances
aroused. This period saw the use of the
telegraph to transmit information over long
distances.
Mark 1 @ Harvard 1940

 Electronic Period - It started in the 1940's and continues to

the present. The highlight of this period is focused on the
advent of solid state devices or electronic devices. The four
main events found in this period are the late vacuum tubes
period, the transistors period, the integrated circuits period,
and the computer processors period.

The periods that greatly affect our lives today ENIAC 1946
involve the electromechanical period and the
electronic period. Nevertheless, there is still a
need to observe and learn from the previous
periods to appreciate the technologies enjoyed
today.

Examples and Uses of ICT

It is important to remember that ICT is not only about computers. Below are just some
examples of items that fall under the ICT banner.

ICT GLOBAL TRENDS

1. 5G Networks
The increasing variety of more complex IoT devices raises the demand for faster
internet connectivity. 5G offers lower latency and higher bandwidth alternatives
to existing networks.

This means more devices can be connected with more capabilities such as
artificial intelligence, edge computing, and automation. Major telecom networks
are preparing for the 5G revolution, with some allocating heftier budgets in 2021.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gOCb-nagRw

2. Internet of Things(IOT)
IoT are physical devices that are connected to each other – embedded with
sensors, software and other technologies for the purpose of connecting and
exchanging data with other devices over the internet.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is changing the way we go about our daily lives, from
work, business, travel, and lifestyle.
And it is seen to drive digital transformation, data-driven automation, and
customer-facing innovation even beyond 2021.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlhmzVL5bm8

3. Edge Computing Processing

Edge computing is a networking philosophy focused on bringing computing as
close to the source of data as possible in order to reduce latency and
bandwidth use.

With deployments of IoT devices and the arrival of 5G fast wireless, placing
compute, storage, and analytics close to where data is created is making the
case for edge computing.

4. CryptoCurrencies and Mobile Wallets

Cryptocurrency is a digital payment system that doesn't rely on banks to verify
transactions. It’s a peer-to-peer system that can enable anyone anywhere to
send and receive payments.

The rapid changes in economic and social conditions and technological

landscape drive a real revolution in the payment processing sector. Digital
payments through e-wallets are likely to stay in a post-pandemic world.

5. Blockchain Technology
Blockchain is a shared, immutable ledger that facilitates the process of recording
transactions and tracking assets in a business network.

Business runs on information. The faster it’s received and the more accurate it is,
the better. Blockchain is ideal for delivering that information because it provides
immediate, shared and completely transparent information stored on an

6. Non-Fungible Tokens(NFT’s)

Non-fungible tokens, or NFTs, are pieces of digital content linked to the

blockchain, the digital database underpinning cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin
and ethereum.

NFTs transform digital works of art and other collectibles into one-of-a-kind,
verifiable assets that are easy to trade on the blockchain.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSLiX1QihEc

7. Robotic Process Automation

Due to lockdowns' economic and financial implications, companies are looking
for ways to maintain or increase efficiency while reducing cost. Robotic Process
Automation (RPA) will free employees from mundane, repetitive tasks.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9URSbTOE4YI

8. Artificial Intelligences(ML,DL)
Artificial intelligence generally refers to processes and algorithms that are able to
simulate human intelligence, including mimicking cognitive functions such as
perception, learning and problem solving.

ML falls within the "limited memory" category in which the AI (machine) is able to
learn and develop over time.

DL attempts to emulate human neural networks, eliminating the need for pre-
processed data

Machine learning(ML) and deep learning (DL) are subsets of AI.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJeNghZXtMo

9. Quantum Computing
Quantum computing is solving highly complex computations that the world’s
most powerful supercomputers cannot solve. Consequently, quantum
computing could reshape innovation and competition in virtually every field,
from manufacturing to finance and logistics.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhrTTqwKjn4

10. Immersive Technology

Immersive technologies create distinct experiences by merging the physical
world with a digital or simulated reality.

To date, business applications are showing more impact and near-term return on
investment than consumer applications. But despite the challenges on the
consumer side, experts believe that 5G will introduce a new wave for immersive

HYPE CYCLE OF EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES

The Hype Cycle is a graphical depiction of a

common pattern that arises with each new
technology or other innovation.
Hype Cycles characterize the typical
progression of innovation, from overenthusiasm
through a period of disillusionment to an
eventual understanding of the innovation’s
relevance and role in a market or domain.

A technology (or related service and discipline

innovation) passes through several stages on its
path to productivity:

 Innovation Trigger (formerly called

Technology Trigger): The Hype Cycle starts
when a breakthrough, public
demonstration, product launch or other
event generates press and industry interest
in a technology innovation.

 Peak of Inflated Expectations: A wave of

“buzz” builds and the expectations for this innovation rise above the current
reality of its capabilities. In some cases, an investment bubble forms, as
happened with the web and social media.

 Trough of Disillusionment: Inevitably, impatience for results begins to replace the

original excitement about potential value. Problems with performance, slower-
than-expected adoption or a failure to deliver financial returns in the time
anticipated all lead to missed expectations, and disillusionment sets in.

 Slope of Enlightenment: Some early adopters overcome the initial hurdles, begin
to experience benefits and recommit efforts to move forward. Organizations
draw on the experience of the early adopters. Their understanding grows about
where and how the innovation can be used to good effect and, just as
importantly, where it brings little or no value.

 Plateau of Productivity: With the real-world benefits of the innovation

demonstrated and accepted, growing numbers of organizations feel
comfortable with the now greatly reduced levels of risk. A sharp rise in adoption
begins (resembling a hockey stick when shown graphically), and penetration
accelerates rapidly as a result of productive and useful value.
