2023-Wireless Communications-CEP-Project

This document outlines a course project for a wireless communications class that involves designing a cellular network for a hometown. Students must determine the number of cells needed based on area density and ensure 95% SINR of 20dB. They must optimize locations of network components using calculations and software. Students must select cost-effective antennas and components meeting specifications. Their design will be evaluated based on a proposal, analysis and design document, field measurements and theoretical results demonstration, and a final report. The project aims to develop problem solving and communication skills while addressing sustainable development goals.

EE4733: Wireless Communications

This course project is designed in a way to enable students to solve the Complex Engineering
Problems (CEP) having the following attributes:

WP1 Depth of Knowledge Required

WP2 Range of conflicting requirements
WP3 Depth of analysis required

This Project is targeting the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

SDG-11 Sustainable Cities and Communities

SDG-15 Life on Land

This Project covers the aspects of the following engineering graduate attributes:

PLO-2 Problem Analysis

PLO-3 Design and Development of Solutions

PLO-4 Investigation

PLO-10 Communication

1. CEP Statement
A cellular planning team of two students is given a task of providing cellular coverage to their
hometown (Name of the town with an area density in persons per km2 from Google) utilizing any
one of GSM (2G)/WCDMA (3G)/LTE-Advanced (4G) standards. The team needs to design a
cellular network that gives coverage to their hometown by ensuring the key performance indicators
set by the national regulator Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) in terms of capacity
and grade of service. Your team has been allocated 20 MHz of Duplex Bandwidth by the
Frequency Allocation Board (FAB).
Capital University of Science and Technology, Islamabad
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering

Your Design shall include:

1. The number of cells required for your hometown in accordance with the area density of
people and pathloss exponent while ensuring an SINR of 20dB for 95% of the time.
2. Optimized locations of the Mobile Switching Center (MSC), Base Station Controllers
(BSCs) and Base Transceiver Stations (BTSs) using Design calculations and Google-Earth
Software.
3. Cost-effective transmit antennas with standard power levels and antenna gains that are
helpful to provide the required EIRPs. Selection of antennas should be based on local
market survey.
4. Antenna Gain and noise figure of your mobile phone with reference to room temperature
of 27o C or 17o C.
5. Pathloss Exponent specific to your hometown

2. Complex Engineering Problem Activities:

The following activities are required for the successful completion of this complex engineering problem.
3. Implementation Phases:
(i) Proposal Submission:
The students are required to submit a project proposal consisting of brief introduction of the project,
literature survey, and proposed design methodology.
(ii) Project Analysis and Design:
The students are required to perform in-depth analysis of the existing literature to finalize the design
according to the technical specifications and communication standards. The students are also
required to check the availability of the antenna and transceiver components/hardware/software
tools and re-evaluate the design if required.
(iii) Project Implementation and Testing:
The students are required to validate their design using theoretical concepts and test the designed
solution for ideal and worst channel conditions. Finally, the students are required to compare their
hardware/simulation results with the given specifications.
(iv) Project Documentation:
The students are required to submit a detailed report developed in a word processing software,
considering IEEE bibliography format in accordance with the given template.
• The report shall contain the following:
1. Title page (includes project title, course code, course title, group members name and reg. nos.,
instructor’s name, and the semester)

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering

2. Abstract (100-250 words)

3. Table of contents (auto generated)
4. List of figures (auto generated)
5. List of tables (auto generated)
6. Details of report sections:
a. Introduction
b. Literature survey with proper citations
c. In-depth analysis of the problem
d. Problem formulation with specifications
e. Proposed methodology
f. Design parameter calculations
g. Field Measurements
h. Validation for ideal and worst channel conditions and results’ descriptions
i. Compliance of the solution to sustainability and development goals (SDGs).
j. Conclusion and future directives.
• References and Appendices (if any)
• Font: Times New Roman, Font Size: 12, Heading: 14 bold, Subheadings: 13 bold
• Reports submitted after due time shall get negative marking.
4. Constraints and General Assumptions:
You can make the following general assumptions in your design:
a) A close-in reference distance of 10 m can be considered. You can assume that the
propagation beyond the close-in reference distance occurs with your measured path loss
exponent and follows a log-normal distribution with a standard deviation specific to the
mobility available in your hometown.
b) Your cellular design should be based on the sensitivity and noise floor level of your mobile
phone. For these values, you can consult to the datasheet of your mobile phone
c) Co-channel interference and adjacent channel interference from other users and cells can
be assumed negligible. Moreover, there is no restriction on the beamwidth of the base
station.
d) Pathloss Exponent can be estimated with the help of field measurements done through
various Mobile Apps like G-Net Track, Cell Mapper and Google Earth. Moreover, you
can consult to mobile operator to avail the information regarding transmission frequency,
transmitted EIRP, height and antenna gain of your respective BTS to be used for field
measurements.
