In English grammar, a modal is a verb that combines with another

verb to indicate mood or tense. Modals are auxiliary or helping verbs.
They may be used in expressing permission, obligation, and
prohibition.

1. Permission (It’s Okay) is an act of giving consent of authorization.

In stating permission, modals to be used includes can and may.
What’s the difference?
Can is informal, while may is formal.

Example:
 Yes, you can borrow my charger, bro!
 May I resume playing video game once my school tasks are
finished?

2. Obligation (It’s Necessary) expresses commitment or duty.

Modals used in expressing obligation:
 Has to/have to/must
 Ought to/should
What’s the difference?
There are two types of modal verbs of obligation:
Those that primarily express a firm obligation or necessity like
following laws and strict rules -must and have to- and those that
express a recommendation or moral obligation such as advice from a
friend -should and ought to.

Example:
 I must phone my dad. It’s his birthday today.
 Seat belts have to be worn by all passengers especially when
driving with children.
 Do you think I should be sorry for missing our anniversary?

3. Prohibition (It’s not Okay) is the act of disallowing or prohibiting

someone in performing or doing something.
Modals showing prohibition:
 Can not = can’t
 Must not = mustn’t
 Should no = shouldn’t
What’s the difference?
Talking about modals of prohibition, can’t tells us that something is
against the rules. Mustn’t is usually used when the obligation comes
from the person who is speaking and shouldn’t when we think
something is a good or bad idea.

Example:
 You mustn’t speak foul language to anyone.
 It is very difficult to live without our mothers, but we can’t stay
with them forever.
 You shouldn’t make decisions when you are angry.
