BEM Spring 2024 Guidelines
1. Class schedule
The overall mode of teaching will be offline. The schedule of classes is as follows:
Instructors: DKM - Dr. Dipak Kumar Maiti, AGD - Dr. Abhishek Ghosh Dastider, TTD - Dr. Troyee Tanu
Dutta, AA - Dr. Archana Arbind, KS - Dr. Korak Sarkar
2. Syllabus
1. Vector Mechanics with applications: Definition and representation of vectors, projection and
decomposition, force vector and types, dot product, resolving force vector along and perpendicular
to a given direction, cross product and scalar triple product, moment of force about a point and
axis, force couple and couple moment, force system, simple distributed force, parallel and
concurrent force systems, equivalent force system and simplest resultant, applications. (Tutorial 1)
2. Equilibrium in 2D - Free-body diagrams, Equations of static equilibrium, special cases like two-
force, three force and multi-force applications (Tutorial 2)
3. Equilibrium in 3D - Free-body diagrams, Equations of static equilibrium, special cases like two-force,
three force and multi-force applications (Tutorial 3)
4. Plane trusses, frames and machines: Plane truss – method of joints & method of sections, frames
and machines (Tutorial 4)
5. Friction: Coulomb/dry friction, applications of friction - wedges, flat belt drives and pulleys, rolling
resistance. (Tutorial 5 minus problems 16, 17 & 22)
6. Internal Forces: Shear force and bending moment diagrams for beams – concentrated loading,
concentrated moment and uniformly distributed loading. (Problems practiced in class)
7. Concept of Stress: Normal stress (axial loading), shearing stress, bearing stress in connections,
analysis of simple structures, design, stress on an oblique plane under axial loading, stress
components under general loading, factor of safety (Tutorial 6 minus problems 19, 20 & 21)
8. Concept of Strain: Normal strain under axial loading, stress-strain diagram, Hooke’s law,
deformation of members under axial loading, Poisson’s ratio, multiaxial loading: generalized
Hooke’s law, shear strain, relation between E, ν, and G of a material. (Tutorial 7 minus problem 18)
1. Vector Mechanics for Engineers - Statics and Dynamics (12th Edition, SIE) by Ferdinand P. Beer, E.
Russell Johnston Jr., et al. |2019.
2. Mechanics of Materials, 8th Edition, SI Units by Ferdinand Beer, E. Johnston, et al. | 2020.
3. Statics and Mechanics of Materials, by Ferdinand Beer, E. Johnston, John DeWolf, David Mazurek
(this is a combined book for the entire syllabus)
Usually, the material taught in the class and tutorial problem sheets should suffice for the course.
However, you are advised to practice additional problems from the book on your own.
4. Evaluation
1. There will be two class tests, one mid-sem and one end-sem exam. The weightage of the different
tests are as follows: class tests (20%), mid-sem (30%) and end-sem (50%).
2. The class tests will be held in the Moodle platform at the PC Labs in the Takshashila building. The
dates for the tests will be announced in the class in due course of time. The mid-sem and end-sem
exams will be held in offline written mode, and are conducted centrally by the institute authorities.
3. A compensatory test at the end of the course will be taken for students who missed the class test
and/or mid-sem, only due to health or family grievances. Participation in the compensatory test is
subject to submission of necessary documents and approval of the competent authority.
4. If a student is absent for the end-sem exam, according to the institute rules the student will
automatically be given backlog in the subject. No compensations are allowed for end-sem exams.
5. According to institute rules, minimum 80% attendance is mandatory for all courses. Low
attendance will lead to deregistration from the subject.
