Fin Stabilizer

Fin stabilizers are used to reduce ship rolling. They consist of two fins extending from the ship's side that can turn through about 20 degrees. The fins are controlled hydraulically using a system that senses roll, velocity, and acceleration to turn the fins in opposite directions from each other based on the ship's movement. This creates forces on the fins that generate moments opposing the roll. The effectiveness depends on the fins' speed of movement and stabilization is only possible when the ship is moving.

(a) Fin Stabilizers

 Fin stabilizers are used to reduce the effect of rolling.

 Two fins extend from the ship side at about bilge level. The fins are usually
rectangular, having aerofoil cross-section
cross and turn through about 20
20˚. Many are fitted
with tail fins which turn relative to the
th main fin through a further 10˚..
 The fins are turned by means of an electric motor driving variable delivery pump
pump,
delivering pressurized oil to the fin tilting gear. This oil actuates the ram which is
coupled to the fin shaft through a lever.

 Most fins are retractable, either sliding into fin boxes transversely or hinged into the
ship.
 Hinged fins are used when there is a restriction on the width of the ship.

(c) How the fins are controlled and operated to stabilize the ship

 Fins are turned in opposite directions as the ship rolls. The forward motion of the
ship creates a force on each fin and hence produces a moment opposing the roll.

 When the fin is turned down, the water exerts an upward force. When the fin is turned
up, the water exerts a downward force.

 The tilting angle of the fins

fin and the resulting moment on the ship is determined
by a sensing control system. The control system which signals the movement of the
fins utilizes two gyroscopes, one measuring the angle of roll and the other, velocity
and acceleration of the roll. The control unit causes movement of the fins by means
of hydraulic power
er unit incorporating a variable delivery pump. As a result of this
control system, fin movement is a function of roll angle, roll velocity, roll
acceleration and natural list.
 The effectiveness of the fin stabilizers depend upon their speed of movement, which
must be rapid from one extreme point to the other.
 Fin stabilizers provide accurate and effective roll stabilization in return for a
complex installation which in merchant
mercha vessels is usually limited to passenger
ships.
 It should be noted that the stabilizing power falls off at low ship speed and no
stabilization is possible when stationary.
