Science7WS - Q4 - Week 4

This document is a science lesson plan about the relationship between the seasons and the Earth's position relative to the sun. It contains two activities to help students understand that the tilt of Earth's axis causes the seasons. Activity 1 asks students to identify which hemisphere receives more direct sunlight in June and December. Activity 2 illustrates how the Northern Hemisphere receives more sun in June when the North Pole leans toward the sun, making it warmer, while the Southern Hemisphere receives more sun in December. The lesson aims to teach students that Earth's tilted axis and orbit around the sun determine the length of daylight and temperature in each hemisphere throughout the year.

SCIENCE 7
Fourth Quarter
Week 4

Lesson: Relationship of the Seasons with the Position of the Sun in

the Sky
MELC: Identify the relationship of the seasons with the position of the sun
in the sky. Using models, relate the following factors:
1. tilt of the earth to the length of daytime;
2. length of daytime to the amount of energy received; and
3. position of the Earth in its orbit to the height of the sun in the sky.
(S7ESIVh9)

Key Concepts

What causes the seasons? Earth’s tilted axis causes the seasons.
Throughout the year, different parts of Earth receive the sun’s most
direct rays. So, when the North Pole tilts toward the sun, it’s summer
in the Northern Hemisphere. And when the South Pole tilts toward the
Sun, it’s winter in the Northern Hemisphere.

The seasons are caused by the

direction Earth’s axis is pointing
relative to the Sun. The Earth revolves
around the Sun once each year and
spins on its axis of rotation once each
day. This axis of rotation is tilted 23.5
degrees relative to its plane of orbit
around the Sun.

As Earth orbits the sun,

its tilted axis always points in the
same direction. So, throughout the
year, different parts of the Earth get
the sun’s direct rays. Sometimes
it is the North Pole tilting toward the
sun (around June) and at times
it is the South Pole tilting toward
the sun (around December).

Activity 1 Is it Longer or Shorter?

Directions:

1. Study Figure 2 carefully. It presents the Earth at different locations along

its orbit around the Sun. Take note that the axis is not vertical, it’s tilted in its
orbit. The letter “N” refers to the North Pole while “S” refers to the South Pole. It
also shows the months that represents the different times of the year. (Not drawn
to scale). Answer the questions below and write it on the space provided after each
question.

2. In which month is the North Pole toward the Sun- June or December?

3. In which hemisphere the Earth receives direct rays from the Sun during the
month of June- Northern Hemisphere or Southern Hemisphere?

4. In which hemisphere the Earth receives direct rays of the Sun during the
month of December? __________________________
5. When a hemisphere leans toward the sun by 23 ½ degrees, just like the
Northern Hemisphere, does it receive more than half of the sun’s rays?
Yes___ No____. Is the day longer or shorter? ____________

Directions: Answer the questions below and write it on the space provided after every
question.
Guide Questions:
1. In June, which hemisphere receives direct rays from the Sun- the Northern
Hemisphere or Southern Hemisphere? ____________________

2. In December, which hemisphere receives direct rays from the Sun- the
Northern or Southern Hemisphere? ____________________________

3. When the North Pole leans or tilted toward the Sun, what would be the
temperature in the Northern Hemisphere- warmer or colder?

4. In what month does the situation or condition in question #3 happen- June

or December? ________________________

5. What do you think would the people living in the Southern Hemisphere
experience during months of December- warmer days/nights or colder
days/nights? _________________________________
