Instructional Supervisory Tools Qualitative

QUALITATIVE INSTRUCTIONAL SUPERVISORY TOOL


1. Detached Open-Ended Narrative Tool
 also known as Selective Verbatim or Script Taping
 observer records every person, event or thing that attracts his or her attention
 the STAR Tool may also be utilized

2. Participant Open-Ended Observation


 a situation in which the observer partakes in the classroom activities
 observer may assist in the instruction by working with a group or helping individual students
 advantage: insights may be culled from direct participation

3. Child-Centered Learning Observation


 focuses primarily on the learner, rather than the instructor
 observer may record observations in response to the following questions:
 Were the children learning or thinking? _______________________________________________________________________________________
 How were the children treated? _____________________________________________________________________________________________
 What opportunities were provided for children to learn in different ways? ___________________________________________________________
 Who is the source of knowledge? ____________________________________________________________________________________________
 Were children talking to children? ___________________________________________________________________________________________
 Were children designing their own learning? ___________________________________________________________________________________
 Who assesses learning? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________
