LESSON 5: OUTLINING TEXT
WHAT I NEED TO KNOW?
At the end of the lesson, you should
be able to:

1. Understand the purpose of an


outline.
2. Determine the most significant
points of a text
3. Develop outline for a specific text.
OUTLINING
An outline is a list of the key points describing the
concepts and the flow of a text. It is arranged in a
logical manner from the main topics to the subtopics.
It serves a roadmap from the beginning to the end of
the text.
PURPOSE OF OUTLINING

•To help readers focus their attention to the significant


points of the text.

•To easily review the flow of information in a text without


getting through unnecessary information.

• To determine the right amount of emphasis that should


be given to a topic.
BENEFITS OF OUTLINING
1). It gives an overview of the topic and it
enables us to see how variables
subtopics relate to one another.

2). Recording the information in our own


words test our understanding of what we
read.
TYPES OF OUTLINE
Sentence Outline

uses complete sentences to put into perspective the


important concepts and flow of the text.
Example:
I.
Main Idea 1: Reading comprehension is essential to most
students.
A. Example 1: It is necessary in understanding concepts
in textbooks and other reading materials.

B. Example 2: It is important in following tests


instructions.

C. Example 3: It is significant in getting the exact


message from school-related memoranda.
Example:

Main Idea 2: There are barriers to a good reading comprehension

A. Lack of grammatical and linguistic competence causes


students difficulty in understanding.

B. Lack of motivation drives students further away from a


good reading habit.

C. Lack of concentration keeps students from focusing on


what they are reading.

Main Idea 3 (Conclusion): Teachers and parents should work together
to improve reading comprehension of students.

A. Teachers should devise effective strategies to


strengthen the grammatical and linguistic knowledge of
students.

B. Parents should continue at home the initiative of


teachers by motivating their children to read.
I.Thesis Statement: Pollution is the result of man's greed and recklessness

Outlines

I. Pollution is mainly caused by destructive technologies


A. Motor vehicles that use fossil fuels are major air pollutants
B. Industrial wastes from factories pollute oceans and rivers.
II.Pollution can be reduced through the use of environment-friendly
technologies
A. People should drive fuel-efficent vehicles
B. Companies should be required to recycle and treat water
III. Pollution can be eradicated through peoples commitment to save the
environment for future generations
A. The government should make and enforce laws to preserve nature.
B. Companies and individuals should preserve nature in their own ways
TYPES OF OUTLINE
TOPIC OUTLINE

order of important ideas and of the text.

Creating an Outline
Most analytical, interpretive, or persuasive essays tend to
follow the same basic pattern. This page should help you
