Orientation Vs Training

The document discusses the differences between orientation, training, and development. Orientation provides a brief introduction to new employees on company policies and procedures, while training provides more in-depth skills and knowledge needed to perform specific job roles. Development focuses on helping employees grow over the long-term through activities like stress management training. While training equips employees for immediate job duties, development prepares them for future responsibilities and improves personal skills. The key difference is that training has short-term, measurable goals for the organization, whereas development has more subtle, long-term benefits focused on employee growth.

Orientation vs Training

Every employee who is hired into the organization or into another division needs to be given
a brief introduction on the policies, principles, and working conditions. Further in-depth
understanding on his/her role and work area must be provided in order for the employee to
carry out the work allocated at his/her best ability.

Orientation

Once an employee is taken into the organization he/she needs to be provided with an
introduction. Orientation refers to this initial introduction every employee receives. This
serves as an important part of recruitment and retention process. Orientation helps to
develop job expectations and positive attitude about the job role for the employee on the
initial day. Also, proper orientation enables to reduce anxiety of the employee caused by
entering into an unknown environment. Further, it provides an introduction/awareness to the
employee on all the departments, the activities, location, policies, rules and regulations, etc
of the company.

Training

Training is a process of gaining knowledge, skills and competence. Be it either a new

employee to the department, or an existing employee in the company being transferred to a
new role, he/she needs to be provided with training to an extent to understand the work
area and the tasks to be carried out. This training provides the employee an in-depth
understanding on the work to be carried out. It provides the knowledge and skills to perform
the job. Therefore, it can be mentioned as training improves one’s capability and
performance. As employees are being trained continuously the company achieves
competitive advantage over its rivals. Training provides motivation for the employees, as
they are kept informed / taught about the work area. This also helps employees to become
more efficient. Various training methods have been introduced, which can be broadly
classified under ‘on the job training’ and ‘off the job training’.

What is the difference between Orientation and Training?

Both orientation and training have different aspects to it, and are important in any
company.

· Duration of orientation is normally for a short period of time, whereas training is

carried out for a longer period of time and with intervals between its sessions, if
necessary.

· Orientation is an introduction, whereas training is the detail on the subject.

· Contents of an orientation would brief the common topics all employees need to
know, whereas training would contain specific information relating to the area the
employee is from.

· Training can be outsourced to specialist trainers depending on the requirement,

whereas orientation can only be done in-house by the company trainers.

· Orientation happens first before training.

Conclusion

Orientation and training provide an understanding into the company or process as relevant,
but the duration and the depth of the subject matter will differ. Both orientation and training
are important to an employee as well as to the company. When an employee gets a proper
orientation, he/she has a positive attitude toward the company and its functions. Proper
training provides the employee with the understanding on the job role and its requirements,
which would lead to a motivated employee and a motivated working environment.

Training vs Development

Training and development are closely interrelated terms that aim to help in achieving the
objectives of the company while at the tame time increasing the efficiency and productivity
of the employees. Though similar in a broader sense, there are many differences between
training and development that will be highlighted in this article.

Training of a new employee is an integral part of his induction and orientation. Training is
imparted so that he understands his roles and responsibilities and learns to perform the
tasks entrusted to him with ease and with efficiency. It is only after a brief training period
that a new employee is able to perform his job at a satisfactory level. Training makes an
employee more productive for the organization and is thus concerned with his immediate
improvement.

Development of an employee is an ongoing process which continues well beyond training.

The focus of development process is the person himself where the focus of training is the
organization. Development concerns with making the employee efficient enough to handle
critical situations in future. So while training concentrates on short term needs of the
organization, development looks after long term goals of the organization.

Training often takes place in groups, and is an event that is variously called as workshops
and seminars. However, training can also be one on one when a supervisor instructs a new
employee on a machine. Sometimes a manager deliberately pairs up a new employee with
an experienced one. This is done to make the new employee learn to do things correctly.
This can be termed as employee development. Sometimes, a manager may entrust an
employee the job that may not be a part of his duty but plays a part in his development.
Sometimes, development refers to techniques such as stress management, breathing
exercises through Yoga and meditation that are not directly related with the production
process of a company but play an important part in the development of the employee.

It is clear then that it is easy to see the tangible effects of a training program but difficult to
quantify the benefits accruing to the company through employee development though it
really helps employees to grow on a personal level.

In brief:

Training vs Development

• While training is an event, development is a process

• Training focuses on short term goals of the company while development focuses
on the employee as a person

• While training results can be measured in terms of benefits to the organization, the
advantages of development are much more subtle
