PHOTOSYNTHESIS

The document summarizes key concepts about photosynthesis. It provides definitions for terms like stroma, the fluid inside chloroplasts, and identifies molecules like CO2, NADP+, and chlorophyll that play important roles. It also accurately describes the multi-step light-dependent and light-independent reactions, including the regeneration of RuBP in the Calvin cycle to fix carbon into glucose.

Photosynthesis
1. What is the thick fluid found inside of a chloroplast? Stroma

2. In the general equation for photosynthesis, which molecule becomes reduced?

CO2

3. During the light reactions of photosynthesis, NADP+ acts as an electron

acceptor.

4. Most of the carbon that is fixed during photosynthesis takes place during the
Krebs cycle. False

5. Which is the main pigment involved with the absorption of light?

Chlorophyll

6. The chemiosmotic production of ATP during photosynthesis is called

oxidative phosphorylation.

7. Why is it beneficial for a plant to produce NADPH and ATP in in the stroma
during the light reactions?

The Calvin cycle can be maintained and powered by NADPH and ATP
because it supplies the chemical energy needed.

8. Which molecule is used during the light-independent reactions to drive the

fixing of carbon? NADPH & ATP

9. What are the four generalized steps of the Calvin cycle and what happens
during each of them?

1. CARBON FIXATION - carbon dioxide is added to RuBP, creating an

unstable molecule.

2. PGAL SYNTHESIS - The unstable intermediate splits to form PGAL.

3. PGAL - molecules are combined to form glucose, which is used to form
starch, sucrose, and other organic molecules.

4. REGENERATION OF RuBP - RuBP is regenerated by rearranging the

remaining molecules.

10. What does a photosystem look like?
