01 VLI GT46AC Intro & Product Familiarization

This document provides an overview and agenda for a training course on the electrical systems of the GT46AC locomotive. The course objectives are to describe the functions of the EM2000 modules, identify the main electrical components, describe how the various electrical systems operate, and learn how to use schematics and documents for troubleshooting. The agenda covers the high voltage systems, companion alternator systems, locomotive computers, and includes on-loco time for fault finding and reviewing systems. Component layout and specifications of the GT46AC are also reviewed.

Slide 9
Diesel-Electric Transfer of Energy

• Loco’s main purpose is to

convert fuel into energy to
turn the wheels and pull
trains
• Key performance measures
– Horsepower
– Tractive effort
• The faster you want to run a
train the more Horsepower
you will need
• The heavier the train you
want to pull the more
Tractive effort you will need

Slide 10
Horsepower
• Fundamentally horsepower is a measurement of how much mass can be
moved a distance over time.
• Converted to electrical power 1hp = 746W
– This is what is measure as an output of the Main Generator

• Adding Horsepower allows an increase in the load pulled with the speed
held constant.
OR
• Adding Horsepower allows an increase in speed with the load held
constant.

Slide 11
Tractive Effort

• Tractive effort is defined as the turning force produced

at the rails by the driving wheels.
• Measured in kN

Slide 12
Adhesion
• Defined by the following locomotive formula:

Tractive Effort
%Adh. = ------------------------------ x 100
Locomotive Weight

Slide 14
Adhesion

• Is required for both starting and stopping

• Is friction between the rail and the wheel which has
a contact patch the size of a dime
• The Locomotive wheel on a steel rail has the same
coefficient of friction as a car tire does on ice
– Without some serious adhesion, locos would go nowhere!

Slide 15
Adhesion
• Adhesion depends on rail conditions
• Dampness, water, leaves, rust, ice, frost, and oil cause
rails to be slippery
• SD70ACs may temporarily reach as much as 45%
adhesion, with year round adhesion of 37%

Slide 16
How Product has evolved
• Pre-1972 – WS Control - 18% - 1500 to 3000hp
• 1972 - Dash 2 WS Control - 21% 3000hp
• 1980’s – “Super Series” Control - 24% 3500hp
• “Super Series” – Improves adhesion by allowing wheels to
exceed ground speed by a small percentage, depending on
rail conditions
• 1992 – EM2000 Control with Radial Truck
(DC Motors) – 28% 3800hp
• 1994 – EM2000 Control (AC Motors) - 33% 3800hp
• 2005 – EM2000 Control SD70ACe – 37% 4300hp
• GT46AC – EM2000 control – 33% 4300hp
