Horsepower
• Fundamentally horsepower is a measurement of how much mass can be
moved a distance over time.
• Converted to electrical power 1hp = 746W
– This is what is measure as an output of the Main Generator
• Adding Horsepower allows an increase in the load pulled with the speed
held constant.
OR
• Adding Horsepower allows an increase in speed with the load held
constant.
Slide 11
Tractive Effort
Slide 12
Adhesion
• Defined by the following locomotive formula:
Tractive Effort
%Adh. = ------------------------------ x 100
Locomotive Weight
Slide 14
Adhesion
Slide 15
Adhesion
• Adhesion depends on rail conditions
• Dampness, water, leaves, rust, ice, frost, and oil cause
rails to be slippery
• SD70ACs may temporarily reach as much as 45%
adhesion, with year round adhesion of 37%
Slide 16
How Product has evolved
• Pre-1972 – WS Control - 18% - 1500 to 3000hp
• 1972 - Dash 2 WS Control - 21% 3000hp
• 1980’s – “Super Series” Control - 24% 3500hp
• “Super Series” – Improves adhesion by allowing wheels to
exceed ground speed by a small percentage, depending on
rail conditions
• 1992 – EM2000 Control with Radial Truck
(DC Motors) – 28% 3800hp
• 1994 – EM2000 Control (AC Motors) - 33% 3800hp
• 2005 – EM2000 Control SD70ACe – 37% 4300hp
• GT46AC – EM2000 control – 33% 4300hp
