Ansys Learning

This document discusses thermal analysis using ANSYS. It describes how finite element analysis is used to analyze heat transfer problems and understand the response of structures under thermal loading. There are different types of thermal analysis including linear and non-linear, steady-state and transient. Steady-state analysis calculates the temperature distribution once temperatures stabilize over time, while transient analysis models how temperatures change over time in response to thermal loading and boundary conditions. Results of thermal analysis include temperature distribution, heat flux distribution, and thermal stresses on structures. Examples analyzed include a heat sink and composite material.

Structural Analysis using Ansys

Lecture No 34
Thermal Analysis

 Devices such as appliances, advanced electronics, engines, air conditioning

systems, heating, and ventilation need to be evaluated for their thermal
performance during the design process.
 Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is a powerful and well-recognized tool used in
the analysis of heat transfer problems.

Objective
To understand the response and behavior of a structure under thermal loading.

Results / Outputs
 Temperature Distribution.
 Heat Flux distribution.
 Structural Response under Different Thermal Loading Conditions.
 Thermal Stress.

Types of Thermal Analysis

1. Linear Solutions. In a linear solution, the material thermal properties do not
change with temperature and there is no radiation.
2. Non-linear Solution. In a non-linear solution, the material thermal properties
can vary with temperature. Thermal boundary conditions and loading can also
vary with temperature. As mentioned, the presence of radiation will force a
non-linear solution.
3. Steady-state Analysis. The steady state in a thermal occurs when the
temperature distribution and all the thermal flows stabilize and remain
constant in time.
4. Transient Analysis. In this type of analysis, the initial conditions are defined
and then a stepping solution is carried out in response to the thermal loading
and boundary conditions.
Structural Analysis Thermal Analysis
FEA equation is F = K*D FEA equation is H = Kt*T
F is Force /load in N (Newton) H is heat in W (watt)
K is stiffness in N/m Kt is conductivity in K (Degrees Kelvin)
D is displacement in m T is the temperature in K (Degrees Kelvin)
Pressure / Stress is in N/m^2 Heat Flux is in W/m^2

Heat Sink (Steady state Thermal)

Lecture No 35
Heat Sink (Transient Thermal Analysis)
A transient thermal analysis calculates temperatures and fluxes in your model over a
particular time range.

Objective
 The time your model takes to heat up or cool down
 The way your model might respond to a time-dependent heat load or bulk
temperature
 The thermal stresses that develop as a result of temperature changes in your
model.

Result / Output
 Temperature Distribution.
 Heat Flux distribution.
 Structural Response under Different Thermal Loading Conditions.
 Thermal stress

Lecture No 36 ( steady state thermal )

Thermal Analysis of Composite Material
In thermal Analysis coefficient of thermal expansion is very important. The coefficient
of thermal expansion describes how the size of an object changes with a change in
temperature. Higher the value of coefficient of thermal expansion material will
expand easily.
Objective
To study the behavior of composite bar.
Result
 Total deformation
 Thermal stress.
