Question 1
On a map, a length of 1 cm represents an actual distance 7 km.
(a) Calculate the actual distance in kilometers, represented by 5 cm on the map.
(b)Calculate the distance in the map, if the actual distance is 56 km.
(c) If there is another map, where the same distance of 56 km is represented by 4 cm, find the
scale of this new map.

Solution:
(a)To find the actual distance
Scale = 1 cm : 7 km
Actual distance = 5 × 7 km
= 35 km

(b) To find the distance in the map

Scale = 1 cm : 7 km
Actual distance = 56 km
Distance in the map = 56 km  7 km
= 8 cm

(c) To find the scale of the second map

Actual distance = 56 km
Distance in the map = 4 cm
Scale = 4 cm : 56 km
= 1 cm : 14 km
= 1: 1 400 000

Question 2
On a map, a length of 1 cm represents an actual distance 8 km.
(a) If a road has a length of 64 km, calculate its length on the map.
(b) If the length in the map is 2.5 cm, calculate the actual distance.
(c) Find the scale of a new map, where 2.5 cm represents 50 km.
