ULM-31А1-HF-F and ULM-31А1-HF-F-LC satisfy all current safety requirements
and standards. Depending on the version, the working emission frequency of the
level transmitters makes approximately 24 GHz for ULM-31А1 and 125±5 GHz for
ULM-31-HF, ULM-31-HF-F, ULM-31А1-HF, ULM-31А1-HF-F and ULM-31А1-
HF-F-LC. The emission power does not exceed 8 mW, which is significantly lower
than than the threshold limit values. The level transmitter is completely safe for the
human and the animals. To avoid the emergency situations at the production facili-
ty, it is allowed operating the device only in good working order. The level trans-
mitters are allowed for use only in the explosion-proof area.

3.4 Operating Principle
The level transmitter is installed on the tank roof, onto the pipe branch flange.
However, no transmitter’s part is dipped inside the tank. The device measures the
distance L from the antenna shield (para. 12.13) to the product surface via the
opening in the flange. Then the computation of the level is carried out by the formu-
la U H L , where H is the installation height.
The reference plane of the level transmitter measuring range is the antenna shield
lower surface.
Distance (L)
Height (H)
Level (U)
The radar level transmitter antenna sends out the radio signal and receives the echo-
signal reflected from the product surface. Using the software-hardware system, the
electronic unit processes the echo-signal and converts it to the corresponding output
signal, which carries the information on the measured value.
ULM.0.01.000RE_10_08_20 14
Fig. 3.13. Measuring Principle.
The level transmitters uses a FMCW principle of operation—the radio locator prin-
ciple. This is one of classical methods for non-contact measuring of the distance,
which allows minimizing the effect of stray interferences and interferences related
to irregularities (disturbances) of the measured product surface.
Operating principle consists in the following: low-power micro wave generator
generates sounding radio signal, with its frequency growing linearly during the
measuring period (solid line in Fig.3.14). This signal (let us call it direct one) is sent
by the sensor antenna in the product surface direction. After delay time Td , the sig-
nal reflected from the surface (the dashed line in Fig. 3.14) returns to antenna. Td –
the time required for the radio wave to travel the distance from antenna to the re-
flecting surface and back. Td = 2·L/s, where s – the light speed. As far as the veloci-
ty of radio wave propagation is constant, so, knowing the time delay, it is possible
to determine the traveled distance. Fig. 3.6 shows, that during the time Td , the fre-
quency of direct signal will increase by F . During mixing direct and reflected sig-
nals, the low-frequency signal of differential frequency is separated out F . Further
on, this signal is digitized and process by the signal processor (DSP). Using the al-
gorithm based on Fourier transformation and the original adaptive algorithms for
processing and noise suppression, DSP carries out the signal spectral analysis re-
sulting in precise value of differential frequency. Having determined this frequency,
we shall determine the signal time delay, and therefore, the distance traveled by the
radio wave. Further on the measured distance is used for calculation of the level and
the volume.

.
The level transmitter is supplied in the package, which ensures its protection during
transportation.
The package is made of cardboard, which is a recyclable material. In certain cases it
is possible to use polyethylene foam and polyethylene film, which are disposed of at
dedicated processing enterprises.
The device transportation shall be carried out in the original package. After trans-
portation the device shall be inspected for available transport damages and com-
pleteness of set. In case of detecting any transport damages or incompleteness of
set, all revealed defects are documented in the established order.
Prior to installation, the devices shall be stored in the original closed packages.
During storage, the following conditions shall be complied with:
- storage temperature - 40…+80˚С;
- relative humidity - 20…85%;
- storage under effect of aggressive environment is not allowed;
- no storage in the open air is allowed;
- during storage, no mechanical impact on the device is allowed.
ULM.0.01.000RE_10_08_20 16
4. INSTALLATION
The level transmitter stability of readings and the product precision of measuring
depend on its correct installation.
- to install the device in such way that in the measurement zone there are no sub-
jects and structures making interferences to the radio wave beam propagation
(pipes, valves, stirrers, tank walls, etc. For details, see para4.4);
- the device should not be installed in such way that the stream of the product filling
up the tank makes in the beam action zone. The device shall be located in an opti-
mum manner away from the feeding area;
ULM.0.01.000RE_10_08_20 17
Fig. 4.2. Device Installation on Tank. Product Feeding.
- during product discharge from the tank, the swirl can be formed on the product
surface. This shall be considered when selecting the device location. The level
transmitter shall be installed above the location with the smoothest product surface.
ULM.0.01.000RE_10_08_20 18
- to provide the level measurement over the total depth of the tank, the level trans-
mitter shall be oriented in direction of the tank lowest point. In the vertical cylindri-
cal hoppers with the cone-shaped outlet, this is achieved by its installation in the
center of the hopper roof.
ULM.0.01.000RE_10_08_20 19

For example. With the hopper is 15 m high, is mounted at 1.6 m distance fro the
center. Using the Table, let us determine the required inclination angle 6˚.
- for device protection against direct sunlight in conditions of hot climate, the pro-
tection screen or the shed should be used;
- the temperature in the level transmitter installation location shall not exceed
+50°С; the radio transparent sealing gasket should be used during the device instal-
lation on the tank with high ambient temperature (see paras 12.5, 12.6);
- the radio transparent sealing gasket should be used during the level transmitter in-
stallation on the tank with excessive pressure or vacuum (see paras 12.5, 12.6);
NOTE
In case the device is used on the tank, where it is impossible to maintain the installa-
tion conditions on the absence of structures in the measuring beam, the following
recommendations should be adhered to:
- the distance from the tank wall to the level transmitter central axis shall be select-
ed within the limits 1/2 to 1/3 of the tank radius (See Fig. 4.7);
ULM.0.01.000RE_10_08_20 21
Fig. 4.7. Device Installation
- if the tank walls are not smooth (for example, corrugated metal, welded joints,
structures), the distance from the wall shall be the longest possible.
NOTE
In case of using the device on the tanks made of non-conductive material (for ex-
ample, plastics), it should be taken into consideration that the structures outside the
tank may hit in the measuring beam. Therefore, during installation, the installation
position should be selected with account of this fact.

The pipe branch inner diameter D shall be at least 100 mm1. The pipe branch axis
permissible vertical deviation, ONLY during measuring the level of LIQUID prod-
ucts - 1°.
The pipe branch height H is measured along its inner surface from the flange to the
opening lower edge. Maximum permissible pipe branch height depends on its diam-
eter. The bigger the diameter, the higher the permissible pipe branch. The formulas
relating the pipe branch diameter and its height are selected based on application
(see para. 4.3).
Use of higher pipe branch may result in occurrence of stray re-reflections and may
hamper the process of measuring. If it is desired to use the pipe branch longer than
the one estimated for application, it is necessary to agree the design with the manu-
facturer. The opening in the roof under the pipe branch shall be no less than the pipe
branch inner diameter. The pipe branch inner surface shall not have irregularities
sized above 3 mm. The stray reflections from irregularities inside the pipe branch
may result in measurement precision and stability impairment.
In case of using the rectangular section pipe branches, the pipe branch height, with
account of the roof thickness in conjunction with the inner structures adjacent to the
roof (stiffening ribs, etc.), shall not exceed the one calculated by the formulas given
in para. 4.3, where the dimension of the rectangle narrow side is put down instead
of the pipe branch diameter.
The requirements for the pipe branch are based on the type of application. The ap-
plications are divided into two types: with the strong reflected signal and with the
low-power reflected signal.
The applications with the low-power reflected signal include the liquids with capa-
bility for foam formation >1 cm, the tanks with the stirrers, in cases, when the de-
vice beam hits the cone-shaped surface, occurring due to agitation and having incli-
nation above 6 degrees, as well as all bulky materials.
All the rest applications refer to applications with strong reflected signal.
The requirements to the pipe branch for applications with strong reflected signal.
Permissible pipe branch height H is calculated by the formula:
H D 2.5 ;
where H – maximal pipe branch height in mm, D – pipe branch diameter in mm.
Calculations for the common-type pipe branches are given in the next Table.

For these applications it is not recommended to use the pipe branches with the
height above 250 mm.
The device main energy is radiated in the beam determined by the directional pat-
tern.

Fig. 4.10. Measuring Beam Zone of Action
The level transmitters have the so-called “dead zone”. This zone is close to the sen-
sor antenna. Its measuring is either difficult or impossible. The “dead zone” is
shown in Fig.4.11 and it may be conventionally divided into three regions. The
closest region (in the Figure on the left), which is impossible to measure. The medi-
um one – the region of unstable measurements. The device can determine the dis-
tance with low precision and the discontinuities of reading are possible. The distant
region of the “dead zone” – the measurements are stable there, but the device certif-
icate precision level is not achieved. The distance of the “dead zone” regions de-
pends on the product reflecting capacity and the available tank structures hit by the
sensor beam. The “dead zone” does not exceed 600 mm, provided that the regula-
tions for the sensor installation in the tank are observed.

4.6 Examples for Installation
The examples for the level transmitter installation designed in accordance with this
instruction requirements are shown in Fig. 4.12 in positions А and B. Installation of
the level transmitter on the tank flange without using the pipe branch is shown in
Fig. 4.12 Variant А and installation using the pipe branch - on Variant В. Variants
C-Е show the installation errors, which should be paid attention to.
Variant C – the roof edge under the pipe branch extends inside the pipe branch. Be-
sides, the opening in the roof is smaller than the minimum permissible one.
Variant D - the pipe branch lower edge is embedded in relation to the roof, due to
which the pipe branch length is longer the permissible one.
Variant Е - the level transmitter is installed with high displacement in relation to the
pipe branch vertical axis. The device should be installed according to the pipe
branch central axis.

4.7. Structures in Tank
The structures located in the tank - tubes, valves, stirrers, tank corrugated walls,
level alarms and other subjects may be the sources of the stray signal. The installa-
tion position of the level transmitter shall be selected so, that there are no obstacles
on the radio signal propagation way. If it is impossible to meet this condition due to
the tank design features, you should address the manufacturer's technical support
desk.
The impact of the design features can be reduced by using the inclined reflectors,
which dissipate the radio signal. The reflectors can be made of sheet metal.

The ULM-31A1-HF-F-LC modification is available, which is intended for
liquid level measurement. It is designed for level measurement under the simple
conditions requiring neither sophisticated adjustment nor additional service func-
tion. In addition, ULM-31A1-HF-F-LC radar level transmitter is equipped with the
special antenna and provides the reliable measurement of liquids even in case of in-
stallation in the high and small-diameter stub tubes. Such solutions can be of inter-
est, for example, in the case of level measurement in the buried drain tanks.

5.5 Power supply
It is recommended to use the stabilized DC power supply with the output voltage of
U ИП 2436В . It is allowed to connect multiple level transmitters to the same
power supply.
Power supply must provide load current output based on 0.3 А per level transmitter:
I ИП 0.3 n ,
where n – number of level transmitters connected to the power supply.
Supply power must be of at least PИП U ИП I ИП .
In case of long power supply line, voltage drop in the supply leads should be taken
into account. Maximum permissible length (in meters) of the feeder cable is calcu-
lated according to following formula
where Sкд is single power wire cross-section in mm2, and Uип is power supply
voltage.
The table below presents results of calculation of maximum length of level
transmitter power cable for the most common wire cross-sections and power supply
output voltage of 24-28V.

When external cable diameter exceeds maximum value permissible for the level
transmitter cable gland, the use is required of terminal box connecting the level
transmitter feeder cable of permissible cross-section and greater cross-section cable
(mains cable). Such connection diagram is shown in Fig. 5.10.

6. INITIAL SETTING AND COMMISSIONING
ULM.0.01.000RE_10_08_20 43
6.2 PC connection via the RS-485 interface.
The digital interface provides user access to the level transmitter readings and ena-
bles level transmitter setting and diagnostics. The level transmitter digital interface
is implemented as a two-wire serial RS-485 line. Modbus RTU data communica-
tions protocol. For protocol details, see “ULM transmitter data communications
protocol”. The advantages of RS-485 application include ease of data communica-
tions network building; capability of transmitting data from dozens of transducers
via the same line without compromising accuracy for distance of up to several kil-
ometers; capability of level transmitter configuring from workstation or its integra-
tion in the factory automation system controlled with PLC (programmable logical
controller).
The ‘A’ and ‘B’ terminals at the level transmitter terminal block are intended for the
RS-485 line connecting (if there is a hardware implementation of the RS-485 inter-
face). Unique Modbus address is assigned to each level transmitter. This address is
set by means of 8-bit DIP switch or defined by the internal device software when
address is set to ‘0’.
USB/RS-485 converter is used for level transmitter connection to the computer via
the digital interface. The level transmitter ‘A’ terminal is connected to ‘+’ terminal,
and ‘B’ terminal is connected to ‘–‘.
ULM.0.01.000RE_10_08_20 44
the work start. Should that be the case, set as follows: transmission rate – 9600bps,
parity – Even, number of data bits – 8, number of stop bits – 1 or 2.
! CAUTION
After the interface converter connection to USB, install the device driver where
necessary. Right-click “My computer” label and choose “Properties” in the context
menu. In the appeared window “System Properties”, click on “Equipment” tab,
then click “Device Manager” key (Win XP procedure). Open “COM and LPT
Ports” section in the equipment list. Find COM-port corresponding to the connect-
ed device, double click it to open “Property” window for chosen port and make
sure that the device functions properly.
The RS485 data communications line is laid with the use of “twisted pair” type ca-
ble with surge impedance of 120Ω. External cable insulation must provide adequate
mechanical and electric strength according to the customer’s process and climatic
conditions. Total line length can reach several kilometers.
ULM.0.01.000RE_10_08_20 45
Fig. 6.5 RS-485 line “Star” laying method
Low transmission rate of 9600 bps used in level transmitter provides good interfer-
ence immunity of communications line and allows application of various cable lay-
ing options including so-called “star” method shown in Fig. 6.5. User can choose
the suitable laying option based on cable laying ease and length minimization con-
siderations. Generally, such type line construction does not require installation of
tracking resistors.
In the long and branched lines, few communication errors could occur. These com-
munication errors do not cause the unreliable level data acquisition, since the Mod-
bus data communications protocol used in level transmitter contains check sum
computation allowing detection of corrupted data. Such data are ignored.

Level transmitter connection procedure:
1. In main menu [Options], indicate number of COM-port, to which the
USB/RS-485 converter is connected
[Options]>[COM port] – allows user to choose the COM1-COM20 port, to
which level transmitter network is connected. ‘AUTO’ item is chosen as de-
fault for the automatic selection of COM-ports.
2) The click on the “Search” key starts the automatic querying the level trans-
mitters with generation of addresses from 1 to that indicated in the ‘Search to Mod-
bus No.’ field. Window shown in Fig. 6.8 will appear. The software adds the found
devices in list. The search is stopped after querying all the ModBus numbers (unless
‘Loop search’ checkbox is flagged). In order to connect to any of found level trans-
mitters for the further work, choose it in list and press ‘ENTER’ key or click ‘OK’
button.
Level transmitter parameters are configured before delivery based on the data indi-
cated by customer in the configuration data sheet at website www.limaco.ru. Set-

tings are stored in the non-volatile memory of transmitter. Make sure to verify these
settings and change them as necessary at the initial equipment setup.
“Minimum distance displayed” – device does not display readings below this val-
ue. It is set within the stable measurement area. Default setting is at the “dead zone”
boundary (600 mm), which is optimum for the most applications. Where measure-
ment of smaller distances is required, this parameter can be decreased upon agre-
ment with JSC LIMACO. Importantly, the value should remain within the stable
measurement range as described in para. 4.5.
When this parameter value is entered, press “Enter”; “Minimum distance meas-
ured” (next line on panel) will be calculated automatically – this is the left (near)
boundary of echo signal search area (N0 is spectral ratio number, from which level
transmitter starts identification of valid signal).
“Maximum distance displayed” is the upper limit of device operation range. It is
generally selected equal to the level transmitter installation height. It allows elimi-
nation of effects of vessel bottom echo occurring under certain circumstances.
When this value is entered, press “Enter”; right dead zone boundary will be calcu-
lated (Nmax is spectral ratio number, up to which (inclusive) device will search and
analyze signal). Upon the Nmax calculation completion, final maximum displayed
distance value in millimeters will be displayed in the field.
ULM.0.01.000RE_10_08_20 49
Fig. 6.10 4-20mA current output setup
“4-20mA output corresponds to” – choose whether the current signal would cor-
respond to the product level in vessel or distance to the product (see Fig. 3.9).
“Sensor mounting height” – input distance (Н) from transmitter mounting flange
to the vessel bottom in millimeters. The H value is used for the vessel filling level
calculation (see Fig. 3.9).
“4mA current corresponds to the level (distance)”, mm. It sets minimum current
4mA correspondence to product level in vessel (distance to the product).
“20mA current corresponds to the level (distance)”, mm. It sets maximum cur-
rent 20mA correspondence to product level in vessel (distance to the product).
ULM.0.01.000RE_10_08_20 50
“Don’t use a signal with amplitude less than” – minimum threshold value of sig-
nal amplitude to be accepted for calculation.
“Sufficient signal amplitude” is used for the device autodiagnostics with the use
of echo signal amplitude as a criterion.
“Time of stable signal identification” – sharp readings fluctuations damping time.
At the sharp and significant change of distance to the reflecting surface, device will
not deliver new distance value until the set time expiration. Delay in device re-
sponse to the distance change in the steady-state mode is natural occurrence, be-
cause product level in the real vessel does not show abrupt changes. Such behavior
is result of algorithm for elimination of product surface instability effects on the de-
vice readings.
“Readings settling time” – parameter determining device dynamic behavior; it is
set depending on the maximum vessel level change rate.
! CAUTION
Excessive decreasing the ‘Readings settling time’ parameter improves dynamic be-
havior but extends readings dispersion and impairs level transmitter performance
in case of disturbances on the product surface in vessel, for example, at product
boiling or vessel top filling.
“Pipe diameter” – setting used for other type of ULM series level transmitters at
product level measurement in the guide pipe (not to be confused with mounting at
the stub tube.) Indicate internal pipe diameter in the tenths of millimeter (“2000” for
the 200mm pipe). In all other cases (including mounting at the stub tube), the value
of this field must be equal to 0.
Other parameters are set where necessary in accordance with manufacturer’s rec-
ommendations based on the provided diagnostics information, see Section 7.
For details of methods of other parameters modification, see software description in
the “Configurator – User's Guide”.

6.4 4-20mA current output. Setting of alarm signals.
Level transmitter is equipped with active 4-20mA current output for connection of
standard receivers.
! CAUTION
Current signals priority for alarm signal readings is as follows: 21mA, 3mA, 4mA.
When any alarm signal is generated, level (distance) readings are not delivered to
the current output. This should be taken into account at the current signals setting.
ULM.0.01.000RE_10_08_20 52
Fig. 6.13 Setting alarm current signals.
Example in Fig. 6.13 shows that the current output delivers as follows:
- 21mA at internal diagnostics of measuring section;
- 3 mA when the level transmitter internal temperature is exceeded.
ULM.0.01.000RE_10_08_20 53
6.5 Setting of relay signals1
Level transmitter has two normally open groups of relay contacts. The “Configura-
tor” software tab allows relay closing criteria setting. Depending on the level trans-
mitter readings and measurement status value, two relay signals are generated.
In the top left part of tab, Fig. 6.14, three text fields are located, which are in-
tended for input of values of two maximum levels (distances) and hysteresis (in mil-
limeters). Hysteresis is required for elimination of unnecessary relay tripping (chat-
ter). For example, 10mm hysteresis means that upon reaching the control level, re-
lay is closed and is not open until level changes back by 10mm. Therefore, readings
dispersion of 10mm about the maximum level due to the surface disturbance at fill-
ing (discharge) will not result in the frequent relay switching.
Sets of switches for setting the relay signal generation conditions are located
below in two columns with separate set for each channel. Selection of top check box
1
Except for the ULM-31A1-HF-F-LC modification
ULM.0.01.000RE_10_08_20 54
switches the corresponding channel on, whereupon three relay closing conditions
become available. Two top conditions set the relay response to the first and second
threshold levels. When both conditions are enabled, then Boolean operation be-
tween these must be defined; in case of “AND”, relay tripping requires simultane-
ous fulfillment of both conditions, in case of “OR”, relay is closed at fulfillment of
either condition. The third condition allows consideration of measurement status
(with mask) at relay signal generation. After it is enabled, indicate when relay is to
be closed (in case of zero status, neither of situations indicated in the status mask
occurred; in case of non-zero status, one or more situations occurred). Status masks
for both relay channels are located on panel on the right; their setting is similar to
that of alarm current signal masks. In case that one or both threshold level condi-
tions are selected in addition to the measurement status, status criterion is combined
with threshold one by means of “AND” / “OR” similarly to that described above for
the first and second threshold conditions.
For example, setting shown in Fig. 6.14 enables both relay and sets the following
order of their tripping. The first relay will be closed at readings falling beyond any
of threshold values ( H 500 or H 7000 ) with measurement status ignored. While
the second relay, on the contrary, will be closed at product level being within the
permissible limits ( H > 500 or H < 7000 ) and zero status bits 0,1,2,6,7,10,11 (sub-
ject to stable and valid readings, and normal level transmitter operating conditions).

7. DEVICE OPERATION INFORMATION
“Configurator” software in the “Diagnostics” tab, Fig. 7.1, contains basic transmit-
ter operation information. It is visually divided into seven panels where transmitter
performance data are displayed. Most lines are displayed in black font; data falling
beyond the permissible criteria or recommended conditions are displayed in red;
gray lines are those not available for input since particular transmitter modification
hardware or software does not allow control of corresponding parameter.
ULM.0.01.000RE_10_08_20 57
- current signal amplitude, and on the right following the “Min.:” word - amplitude
criterion (“Adequate signal amplitude” in the “Configuration” tab). When amplitude
is below criterion, bit 2 of the status register is set to 1.
“Measuring device test” – measurement system performance indicator; on the right
– maximum permissible value; when this is exceeded, bit 1 of the status register is
set to 1.
! CAUTION
If the “Measuring device test” parameter maximum permissible value is exceeded,
this means the level transmitter electronic module failure. Follow repair request
procedure in accordance with para. 11 hereof.
- “Readings stability” – indicator of general stability (short- and long-term one).
- “Mode” – steady-state mode when transmitter finds steady signal, otherwise –
transient mode – test mode after switching on.
- "Supply voltage" – current and minimum permissible voltage in volts (status bit
7). Temperature inside the transmitter casing in degrees centigrade, and permissible
temperature range (status bit 10).
“Transmitter vertical deviation” – in two planes in degrees, and permissible devia-
tion (status bit 6). When permissible deviation is exceeded, transmitter leveling is
required (with water level).
The “4-20mA Output” panel visualizes current output settings: base height (H0 -
on the right), levels/distances corresponding to the 4 and 20 mA currents (4ma_N =,
20ma_N= on the left), and current level and distance values. In addition, measure-
ment range limits are highlighted in magenta on the top and bottom.
The “Readings” panel displays level, distance, input and output currents, and relay
contacts positions.
ULM.0.01.000RE_10_08_20 58
7.2 Output signal emulation
Output signal emulation is the debugging mode enabling current output setting and
operation testing.
Press the “EMUL.” key, transmitter will change to emulation mode in about 4 sec-
onds. The key is fixed in the pressed position, inscription color changes to magenta.
Thereupon, level and distance values become available for editing. At the change of
these parameters, output current signal must also change in accordance with data in
this panel.
In order to cancel emulation mode, click on the «EMUL» key once again, transmit-
ter returns in normal mode in 4 seconds.

8. TROUBLESHOOTING
In the case of fault occurrence, personnel responsible for the level transmitter opera-
tion must take remedial measures. Operation of faulty level transmitter operation is
prohibited.
Sources of level transmitter failure can be as follows:
- measuring device failure;
- data-displaying receiving device;
- level transmitter power supply;
- process in vessel.
In the case of failure, source of failure must be identified to maximum precision.
When analog signal is used, check output signal delivery and correct generation di-
rectly at the level transmitter output, check whether the 3mA, 4mA or 21mA alarm
signals exist, check supply voltage.
The use of PC with “Configurator” software provides most comprehensive meas-
urement troubleshooting facilities.
NOTE
In most cases, this allows failure cause identification and measurement problem
resolution.
Device performance diagnostics via the Bluetooth link is also available.
