Position Paper (Cry of Balintawak) (Readings in Phil. History)

The document discusses the debate over whether the first cry of rebellion during the Philippine Revolution occurred in Balintawak or Pugad Lawin. It provides several pieces of evidence suggesting it took place in Balintawak on August 26, 1896, including eyewitness accounts, government maps from 1943 that mark Balintawak as a separate place, and linguistic research that found no evidence of Pugad Lawin existing as a place name. Based on the multiple credible facts and accounts presented, the document concludes that the first cry of rebellion most likely occurred in Balintawak on August 26, 1896.

Cry of Balintawak

There are many presented facts stated in every accounts whether the first cry of

rebellion occurred in balintawak or in pugad lawin that’s why it is difficult for me to

pointed out which of the two is more convincing. This controversial is remained

unsolved until now.

I think the first cry of rebellion happened in balintawak on August 26, 1896 based

on the account of Guillermo Masangkay who is an eyewitness of the historic event and

a childhood friend and adviser of Bonifacio. In his account, he presented a lot of facts

about what exactly happened on August 26, 1896. I can say that his account is credible

in the way how he presented the happenings on that time. Even Pio Valenzuela who

also happened to be an eyewitness of the event said that the Cry was in Balintawak on

Wednesday of August 26, 1896 and he stated it when the event are still fresh and vivid

in his memory, so that means the first Cry occurred in Balintawak but I wondered why

he altered this later and claimed that the Cry took place at Pugad Lawin on August 23,

1896 with his fading memory. I think he just altered it because a lot of emergent stories

and accounts stating that the first Cry happened in Pugad Lawin on August 23, 1896.

In 1943 map of Manila marks Balintawak separately from Kalookan and Diliman.

The sites where revolutionary events took place are within the ambit of Balintawak.

Government maps issued in 1956, 1987, and 1990, confirm the existence of barangays

Bahay Toro, but do not define their boundaries. Pugad Lawin is not on any of these

maps.
Writer and linguist Sofronio Calderon, conducting research in the late 1920s on the

toponym “Pugad Lawin,” went through the municipal records and the Census of 1903

and 1918, could not find the name, and concluded that “It would be a mistake to say

that there is such as Pugad Lawin in Kalookan”. In conclusion, “Pugad Lawin” was

never officially recognized as a place name on any Philippine map before Second World

War. Second, “Pugad Lawin” appeared in historiography only from 1928, or some 32

years after the events took place. And third, the revolution was always traditionally held

to have occurred in the area of Balintawak, which was distinct from Kalookan and

Diliman.

In this presented facts, I can say that the first Cry occurred in Balintawak on

August 26, 1896. I think there were several accounts and variety of dates presented

about the first Cry of rebellion due to the movement of Bonifacio from different places

from time to time in evading of Spanish government who were pursuing Katipuneros.
