Hormone Notes

The pancreas controls blood glucose concentration through the release of hormones. It contains clusters of cells called the Islets of Langerhans. Alpha cells secrete glucagon if blood glucose levels fall, signaling the liver to convert glycogen to glucose and release it into the blood. Beta cells secrete insulin if blood glucose rises, stimulating uptake of glucose by tissues and reducing blood glucose levels. The pancreas balances blood glucose levels through these hormones to maintain homeostasis.
