Students will create a color wheel using found objects arranged in the proper order of primary, secondary, and tertiary colors. They will then select two complementary colors from the color wheel and create a drawing using only those colors that can be realistic or abstract. The drawing activities are meant to teach students about color theory and using color properly to create interesting designs. Daily checks will provide feedback on students' color wheels and drawings submitted through Google Classroom or photos.

Grade 6 Visual Art: Experimenting with Color


Targeted Goals from Stage 1: Desired Results

Content Knowledge: Understand the importance of color in the world we live in

Vocabulary: color wheel, primary, secondary, tertiary, complementary colors

Skills: Using color properly to create an interesting design

Expectation: Part I: Students will create a color wheel by arranging primary, secondary, and tertiary colors in the proper order. The color
wheel will be created out of found objects (some examples could be objects from nature, using different types of foods, colored beads, etc. ).
Students can mix and match materials to create this color wheel. Part II: Students will use this color wheel as a reference and select 2
complementary colors and create an interesting drawing that can be realistic OR abstract.

Part II: -Select 2 colors that are across from
each other on your color wheel and create a
drawing using only these 2 colors. The
drawing is up to you (some examples can
include something from nature, your favorite
food, a favorite object, or just an interesting
design).
- The 2 colors that are across from each
other are called Complementary
colors and consist of the following:
red & green, blue & orange, yellow &
violet, red-violet & yellow-green,
blue-green & red-orange, yellow-
orange & blue-green
